AND THE QUESTION
ОБ
DEVELOPMENT CONTEXT
IN SLOVAK OPERA
This study analyses development context in a history of Slovak
opera. Bella s opera Smith Wieland stands at the beginning of this
development, which is connected with the alteration of the opera
perception from hedonistic amusement and relaxation to artistic
phenomenon. This study analyses further operas written by
Eugen
Suchoň, Ján
Cikker
and Juraj
Beneš
and explores, how opera reac¬
ted to the development of operatic

and aesthetical and
philosophical movements.
OSKAR NEDBAL
AND THE ASSUMPTION
OF MODERN OPERATIC DRAMATURGY
Even though, in history of music,
Oskar Nedbal
is known for his
romantic style compositions, he tried to create the repertoire,
which consisted of classical and modern operatic pieces in mutual
proportion and balance, during his engagement in Bratislava as ar¬
tistic director, conductor and dramaturge.

OPERATIC PRODUCTION OF
JÁN
CIKKER
Cikker s operas are
the most important
conjunction between
ideals of Slovak opera and the style and dramaturgy of European
operas in the twentieth century. Cikker connected the ideal of na¬
tional music and opera with the ideal of new opera in his operatic
production. We clearly sense his respect for human and his moral
dimension in the conception and dramaturgy of his operatic pro¬
duction. Cikker s operas didn t have only the function of the bridge
between east and west, but also the function of humanity, full of ar¬
tistic and ethical deputation, during the times of communism.

SUCHOŇ S
OPERAS
The study analyses the way of artistic use of Christian ethic prin¬
ciples in
Eugen Suchoň s
operas
Krútňava
and
Svätopluk. Suchoň
employs metaphor and allegory artistically. In operas of

THE PREMIERE OF

on motif from
Shakespeare s Hamlet. The world premiere was in May

translation of this play.

productions, a new unique theatre poetics is created which enhan¬
ces the pluralism of styles, an overall heterogeneity of productions
and a close tie with the predecessors in the sense of the disconti¬
nuity of thoughts and aesthetics. In a way, each of the operas
represents a postmodern effort to digress from a solid structure and
semantics. This proclivity toward an aesthetic and style pluralism
and the ambivalence of the content have been reflected most po¬
tently in ironically and persiflage-reflected eclecticism.
THE ELEMENTS OF POST MODERNITY,
PLAYFULNESS AND ABSURDITY
IN OPERA CIROSTRATUS AND IN ITS STAGING
The first performance of opera Cirostratus was 25th of January
in Bratislava theatre GUnaGU. The author of libretto was a director
Viliam Klimáček,
the author of music was composer
Slavo Solovič.
Cirostratus is that type of musical-theatrical piece, which uses
the poetry of post modern theatre. It consists of free scenes series,
instead of classical operatic structure. This scenes are connected
basically on free associations and these emphasize the playfulness
and absurdity.

WORLD OPERATIC PRODUCTION

This study
deals
with
Korsakov s opera The Golden Cockerl and
emphases the elements of political and social
satire. The staging
of
Pavol

and its analysis mention the contemporary actuali¬
zation of the satiric elements.
THE DRAMATURGY AND AESTHETICS
OF
SCHÖNBERG S ERWARTUNG
The paper ponders over the compositional and dramaturgic shape
of
Schönberg s
monodrama
Očakávanie
(Erwartung, 1909),
which)
in
a way, opened up the way to new trends in the 20th century ope¬
ra.
Erwartung
reacts to the period artistic and spiritual atmosphere
(fin de siècle,
Expressionism,
Freudism)
and portrays the female pro¬
tagonist in an extreme life situation. In this work,
Schönberg
deline¬
ates athematic and atonal approaches to composition, and in a novel
way approaches time space dimensions of a theatrical work and
the relation between the naturalistic and abstract image systems.
FILM IN OPERA

BY DARIUS MILHAUD
The paper contemplates the use of film projection in an operatic
production. The analysis leans on two productions of Milhaud s
-
opera

at the Berlin opera
Unter den

(1930, 1998).
The author familiarized himself with the second
production by attending the performance, while he attempted

to re-trace the presence of film devices in the first production
based on the preserved stage designs and the composer s written
reflections.
While in
1930,
the use of the film means of expression was
linked with the infatuation with a new communication medium,
currently, the producers focus on a deliberate linking up with the
thought and aesthetic starting points of the
1930
production team,
however, capitalizing on the current technological and artistic
potential of cinematography.
The author spells out what he believes to be unconventional,
ingenious, and novel in the basic approach of the director Peter
Greenaway, and also determines the mutual link between the pro¬
duction aesthetic and ethical levels, and to what extent film helps
co-create them. The reflection of the Europe
-
America relation¬
ship in the
1998
operatic production and the capacity of film
to partake in the production make-up are given particular atten¬
tion. Theoretical and aesthetic generalisations in the final part
of the paper elaborate on the uniqueness of the involvement of
film in an operatic production, and how the use of film devices
contributes to the uniqueness of the opera s production integrity.
UPDATING OF SAINT FRANCIS S CONCEPTS
IN MESSIAEN S OPERA SAINT FRANCOIS
D ASSISE
The conception of the libretto betokens dramaturgical constru¬
ction of the opera. Messiaen chooses the key moments from pre¬
served legends about the life of Saint Francis. In his dramaturgy,
Messiaen describes Saint Francis as the human, who directs to a spi¬
ritual dimension of the being. Music illustrates both of these
dimensions. In his opera, Messiaen introduces the question of
a function of music and art in spiritual life of a human.

This study analyses the question of exotic elements in opera
L Upupa
composed by Hans Werner Henze. The opera has world
premiere in
Salzburger Festspiele 2003.
Exotism,
in the structure
of the opera
L Upupa,
isn t connected only with the motifs from

emphasized the

also. It in¬
terconnected staging simplicity with the powerful meaning and

MINIMALISM IN OPERA
The contribution analyses the phenomenon of minimalism
in opera. It is stemming from determining the phenomenon of mi-
nimalization in music, theatre and other artistic genres. It is hinting
at understanding of minimalism in opera as a reaction on poetics
