Headache is a huge public health problem, and studies have shown that the
cost of migraine in Europe alone is roughly
is one of the most costly neurological disorders, even more so than epilepsy
and movement disorders. Yet despite the enormous burden posed by headache
and migraine, their specialist care is poorly organized and there are relatively
few headache clinics and academic headache centres in comparison with those
available for the management of other neurological conditions.
Part of the Frontiers in Headache Research series, this book focuses specifically on
headache clinics and also seeks to address some of the reasons behind the
general lack of specialist services dedicated to the management of headache
and migraine. Main sections of the text cover the classification and organization
of headache clinics, their patient characteristics, their methods of diagnosis, and
their approaches to multi-disciplinary management. Individual chapters
examine the latest diagnostic laboratory techniques, the use of neuroimaging,
and some of the more specialized diagnostic methods employed in referral
headache centres such as nitroglycerm challenge, indomethacm testing, and
oxygen breathing. The treatment options for severely affected patients are also
discussed, including the possibilities of combining two or more prophylactic
medications, the use of epidural blood patch and the different methods for
discontinuation of medication overuse.
