Hummel
(1778-1837)
was an influential teacher, composer, and musical inno¬
vator considered by many to be the greatest European pianist of his era. Hummel played a signif¬
icant role in transforming the musical style of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries;
he was one of the first
professioîial
musicians to take on roles as both artist and entrepreneur

model that continues to this day.

important composer and performer. Thirteen chapters focus on different aspects of

music, and career, such as his family and early years, his experiences living under the regime of the
