Rakowicki
Cemetery
in
the tradition
of the Academy
of Fine Arts
in Krakow
Founded in
1803,
the Rakowicki Cemetery is one of the oldest necropolises
in Poland. As Krakow s most important cemetery, in the over
200
years of its
operation, it has become a precious historic area, both as a valuable establish¬
ment of park-like character, and as an open-air gallery of small-scale architec¬
ture, sculpture, medal-making, stained-glass work, artistic ironwork, and other
areas of artistic craftsmanship.
Above all, however, the Rakowicki Cemetery is the final resting place of
many well-known politicians, community and economic activists, learned per¬
sons of all disciplines, writers, poets and journalists, persons from the theater
and film worlds, artists
—
painters, sculptors, printmakers, insurgents, under¬
ground activists and soldiers, clergy of various faiths, and unquestioned moral
authorities. Their resting places, gravestone symbols and inscriptions
—
many
times containing patriotic material
—
independent of the artistic values of the
historic cemetery, are the deciding factor in its attractiveness to more and more
numerous visitors.
The 200th anniversary of the Rakowicki Cemetery s founding, observed in
2003,
became a reason for widespread interest in this historic area. At that time,
a guidebook to the cemetery was published (the first after a break of many
years). The Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences published the book Scien-
tiarum Decor. Graves of Polish Scientists in the Rakowicki Cemetery, which con¬
tained the names of learned persons
—
members of the Academy
—
as weU
as short biographical notes on them, and information on the exact location of
their graves, permitting visitors to find a given person s resting place. Two years
later, in
2005,
an analogous book was published, also by the Polish Academy of
Arts and Sciences, concerning persons from the theater and film world: Ihe-
atri Decor. Graves of Polish Actors in the Rakowicki Cemetery. The present work,
published on the initiative and effort of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow,
alludes in its assumptions and title to the monographs on learned persons as
well as persons from the theater world.
Among the numerous well-known and meritorious persons laid to rest in
the Rakowicki Cemetery, an important group is represented by artists from
the fields of painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, stage design and art
criticism, as well as lecturers and pedagogues from many artistic disciplines.
Krakow, home to the oldest university in Poland, at which was created in
1818
a Faculty of Fine Arts
—
later an independent institution of higher learning
in the arts, from
1873
onward functioning as the School of Fine Arts
—
was,
naturally, a focal point for Polish artistic life, especially during Partition times. It
was here that, in autonomous
Galicia,
Polish academic and cultural institutions,
schools, academic and artistic associations, theater and the press were able to
develop relatively freely. It was these institutions, enjoying their relative free-
252
dom,
which attracted learned persons and artists to the city, which was, after all,
not particularly wealthy. For many of them,
Kraków
became the place of their
lifetime s work; for others, a temporary port of call, a place for a few years study
and learning, a center for the gaining of artistic spurs before moving out into
the world. These also not infrequently returned to their hometown and place
of study, attracted by its unique atmosphere and wonderful historic structures.
Thus, it is not at all strange that in the course of over
200
years, Krakow s ne¬
cropolises
—
starting with the Crypt of the Meritorious at the Pauline Church
on the
Skałka,
where
Jacek Malczewski, Henryk Siemiradzki and Stanisław
Wyspiański
found their final resting place; and finishing with the relatively new
cemeteries in
Prądnik Czerwony
and
Grębałów
—
became the place of rest for
many artists associated with the Academy of Fine Arts in
Kraków.
Of particular
significance are two of these necropolises: the Rakowicki Cemetery, as well as
the Salwatorski Cemetery, to which a separate work will be devoted.
The present book contains a historical outline of the Rakowicki Cemetery,
with particular attention to the relationships of the city s artistic community
with the necropolis. A fundamental part of the book is represented by the list of
586
names of artists buried here in the years
1809-2006.111636
names and short
biographical notes, in conjunction with information about the location of the
grave and transcript of the gravestone inscription, referring to sculptors, paint¬
ers, printmakers, stained-glass artists, stage designers, pedagogues, art critics
and popularizers of art, comprise a picture of the
Kraków
artistic community. A
perhaps somewhat one-sided picture, since the point of departure for this work
were the graves of artists at the oldest and most historically valuable necropolis
in the city. The book is, thus, a contribution to the history of both the Academy
of Fme Arts in
Kraków,
and the Rakowicki Cemetery. It is also a recollection
of many biographies
—
though, naturally, very lapidary. Aside from the artists
place of study, artistic achievements, functions and academic degrees, prizes and
positions held, we have also seen a need to remind the reader of the colorful,
often tragic happenings which were the lot of the Polish people in the 19th and
20th centuries. Thus, in the biographical notes, we have also signaled participa¬
tion in national uprisings and the patriotic underground, service in the Polish
Military Organization, participation in World War I, the battles of the Polish
Legions, the defense of
Lwów
(present-day Lviv in Ukraine) and participation
in the Polish-Soviet war of
1920.
From times closer to ours comes information
about the participation of many artists in armed combat during World War II,
exile to Siberia, Soviet jails and German concentration camps, as well as partici¬
pation in actions to aid the Jewish people. Here, however, many similar achieve¬
ments and merits could have remained unknown to a wider circle because it was
impossible to expose these facts in memoirs, obituaries or gravestone inscrip¬
tions during the Stalinist period or during the times of political censorship in
the Polish People s Republic.
The historic Rakowicki cemetery still fulfills its utilitarian function. This
means that temporary graves which are not paid for after the elapse of the des¬
ignated time
(20
years) are dug up and used again. Thus, some graves are just not
there anymore; only the record from the cemetery register speaks of the origi¬
nal resting place of the given person. It also sometime happens that on family
vaults, or gravestones of close family members, inscriptions have been placed pro
memoria,
in reference to persons whose resting place remains unknown. In both
of these cases, the names of these people have been included in this book, with
appropriate annotation.
The grave monument, crypt or ordinary gravestone not infrequently became
an occasion for artistic creation. On the graves of artists were placed their own
compositions, sometimes self-portraits, or works of artist friends. The author-
253
ship of some works has not been possible to establish; however, many others
are signed by distinguished Polish artists. It is to this aspect of the Rakowicki
Cemetery, as a peculiar sort of art gallery, that we have tried to draw particular
attention. This purpose is also served by movingly poetic photographs, authored
by
Piotr Witosławski.
lhe
memory of the generations wanders along various paths; and the old,
historic cemetery, rooted in the past of the old, historic city, is particularly con¬
ducive to reflection. In the present book, the final resting places of almost six
hundred artists are presented. Some of them are to be found along the Way of
the Meritorious; others are multi-generation family vaults or gravestones orna¬
mented with works of art of high class. However, there are also lonely places,
damaged gravestone plates, abandoned earth mounds, or
20
graves which actu¬
ally no longer exist, having been long since supplanted by another grave. This
walk around the cemetery gives us an awareness that a grave and gravestone
inscription are only in small measure able to rescue us from oblivion. Thus, the
idea of the present book: to pay homage to persons whose artistic achievements
and passions have become an inseparable part of our national heritage.
