Women in the Roumanian Gulag
(1945-1989)
Argument
The present paper stems from, the possibility offered
by Ana Blandiana and Romulus Rusan to carry out a pe¬
riod of research at the Communism and Resistance
Victims Memorial from Signet during the summer of
2004.
The research theme was suggested by Ruxandra
Cesereanu, expert in the issue of the Romanian Gulag,
whose advice has been of great use during the work for
this project. Therefore, I would like to thank her for her
help back then.
I started initially from several well known feminine
memoirs and detention diaries. Whit time this
bibliography grew to the present dimensions.
Nevertheless, one of the exigencies of my research was to
manage in garnering all the major testimonies regarding
the theme.
My reasons for choosing to dwell upon such an
issue have been numerous. First and foremost, there were
no serious works to discuss the problem of feminine
detention in the Romanian concentration space. My
predecessors trials were just some books reviews and
sometimes reviews of certain chapters that were somehow
related to my subject.
When I initiated this project, the only studies that
dwelt at least in
nuce
upon this problem belonged to: Vic¬
tor
Clonara,
The woman in the anticommunist resistence,
published in Sighet Annals
1 -
Memory as form of justice
(Civic Academy Foundation,
Bucureşti,
1995,
p.
340.-342),
Ruxandra Cesereanu, Women in the Concentration Inferno
(The Romanian Gulag), published in the collective volume,
Feminine Presences. Studies on Women in Romania,
(editors Ghizela Cosma,
Enikő
Magyari-Vincze, Ovidiu
Pecican, Desire Foundation Publishing House, Cluj-
Napoca,
2002,
p.
439-452)
and Andrea
Dobes,
Testimonies
about the Romanian woman s drama between
1950-1964,
Graţian Cormoş
published in The Annual of Oral History (vol. IV,
Cluj
University Press Publishing House, Cluj-Napoca,
2003,
p.
215-231).
Recently, Liana Cozea has published a volume of
the feminine journals (Confessions of the feminine spirit,
Paralela
45
Publishing House,
Piteşti,
2005),
in which she
presents the testimonies of two of the most important
persons of the Romanian Gulag: Oana Orlea and Lena
Constante.
Second of all, I wrote this book because I subscribe
to Ruxandra Cesereanu s belief that: in their testimonies,
the detention s impact has a rougher tint than in male
testimonies, probably because of the feminine vocation to
depict more lively the pain . (A Trip to the center of the
Inferno, p.93.)
Nevertheless, I have reached the conclusion that in
the collective volumes of testimonies or of analyses
regarding the political detention, references to women s
involvement in the fight against the communism were
minimal. In many of them, these women are barely
mentioned. Undoubtedly it is true that, to speak in
figures, the participation of women to the anticommunist
opposition during these
45
years has been less numerous
than that of the men. Yet, the women s resistance
deserves, without any doubts, serious analyses.
For the present work I kept the original title, Women
in the Concentration Inferno from. Romania
(1945-1989),
because it is the most suggestive for the drama of the
Romanian women involved in the political communist
oppression. It is worth mentioning that the entire feminine
detention bibliography suggests it, in a symbolical way.
More often than not, there are mentioned the Purgatory,
the Hell, the Inferno, the seven stops of the Sufferance, the
Gologota.
The almost complete bibliography of this volume
brings together feminine memoirs that were less known,
too, and upon which there have been no such studies as
the present one. I will give with two of the most suggestive
examples: Madeleina Cancicov s book,
Le cachot de
marionettes.
Quinze ans de prison. Roumanie

__________

and the second volume of the collective testimonies written
by the legionnaire women, Tears of Persecution, which
have been generously offered by Mihaela Ghitescu and
Traian Stef.
Except from the volumes of feminine memoirs, the
majority of the testimonies of these women were to be
found in The Memory, the
magazine
of the arrested
thoughts, The Annual of Oral History, Sighet Annals,
Historical Magazine or in other books published by the
Civic Academy Foundation.
My research was structured in the form of a
behavioral essay, which attempted to cover, gradually, in
chapters, the whole process of feminine oppression and
detention during the communist period. The succession of
the chapters is not fortuitous, but resorts to a coherence
easy to follow. In the first chapter I tried to define all the
conflict situations between the communist regime and the
women who opposed it (who and why was oppressed),
continuing to dwell upon the abuses upon these women,
the consequences of
tuie
oppression, as well as the means
by which these women have resisted the challenge of the
concentration Inferno. Eventually, I have carried out a
concise comparison between the feminine and the
masculine detention in the Romanian Gulag.
The present work is designed, not only for the
experts, but also for the common people. It is,
unassumingly, a documented trial of bringing foreword a
historic period that deserves to be known in detail. I have
also written this book thinking that history repeats itself in
camouflaged forms and that
mystification
is sometimes
more difficult to detect, yet immanent to life. This has
meant to me
-
and I hope for the reader, too
-
a good
occasion for philosophical reflection.
