Latvians belong to

partly politically punished (deported) peoples of the
65
peoples of
the USSR, which were politically repressed (deported or partly deported). These peoples were
intended to be "melted" in the Siberian "boiler", to be subjected to colonization and
Russification.
For dozens of years, they were subjected to different types of political
punishment. In Latvia there were restrictions in the spheres of job and education, and the
types of political punishment were the following: deportation
(высылка),
displacement
(ссылка),
special displacement
(спецпоселение).
About
100,000
inhabitants of Latvia were
subjected to special displacement. It was the political displacement of Soviet peoples.
'
A large
part of political enemies were arrested, put into prisons of Latvia and eight prisons of the
USSR, or were sent to Corrective Labour Camps or special camps in Gulag, which were in
essence all colonies of death of totalitarian Communism. In
1938-1956,
of the total of
252
complexes of the USSR People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs
-
Ministry of Internal Affairs
Chief Directorate Administration of Corrective Labour Camps and Colonies, the inhabitants
from Latvia and ethnic Latvians were imprisoned in
44
slave labour camps, i.e. in one-fifth
of them. Although these camps were officially called Corrective Labour Camps
(ИТЛ),
in
essence these were camps of death, from which only few percent of the prisoners managed
to get out, already physically and morally disabled. One of these complexes of camps of death
was Viatlag, which was situated in the District of Kaisk, Kirov Region, Russian Soviet
Federative Socialist Republic, as the secret institution K-231 with the address "Mailbox
231".
Viatlag, one of the complexes of USSR forced labour camps, had
32
sections. In
1938-1956,
6781
Latvian citizens and ethnic Latvians were imprisoned there, of which at least 26272
(38.7%)
were shot, perished from the heavy work, starvation, or frost. In world history, no
country is known where the Communists, as they seized power, would not have realised
massacres.
The Communist totalitarianism made efforts to "cure" the Latvian people from capitalism
and nationalism by cutting off the head of this people
-
i.e., by destroying its political,
economic, and spiritual elite. Concentration camps were an integral part of the USSR "large
zone", part of the "totalitarian reserve" of Europe. These were the factories of death of the
first country where socialism had triumphed, where genocide against peoples was realized
in the course of half a century. Therefore, the next generations will be shocked by the global
amnesia of the contemporary democratic world concerning the lives of millions of people,
which were extinguished by this "masterpiece of totalitarian Communism."
Presently, the U.S.A and the European Union speaks about the occupation of the Baltic
States in
1940-1990,
