Product
configuration
is the key technology for the company which wants to meet
its customers requirements for greater flexibility and specially adapted products
in order to improve its ability to compete.
In Customized products, the authors present an operational procedure for con¬
structing configuration systems in industrial and service companies. The procedure
covers all the steps from the identification of needs to the operation and mainte¬
nance of the configuration system. The book is based on experience from more than
40
configuration projects in industry and service companies, all of which have
resulted in marked advantages for the companies involved, in the form of shorter
lead times, increased productivity, fewer mistakes in the delivered goods
-
and thus
more satisfied customers.
Configuration systems have turned out to be one of the most efficient means for
creating customer-adapted products. The pump manufacturer
Grundfos,
for
example, has reduced the time needed for dealing with customer orders from
3
days
to
3
minutes by introducing a configuration system. By using configuration systems
for sales and development of manufacturing specifications, American Power Con¬
version (APC), which produces infrastructure systems for large data centres, has
reduced the overall delivery time for their systems from
400
to
16
days. F. L. Smidth,
who produces cement factories, has implemented a configuration system for produc¬
ing offers, and has in this way reduced the time required for working out an offer
from
3
weeks to
1
day, while at the same time improving its dialogue with the customer.
