The relationship between
Catholic Modernism at the turn of the 20th
century
At the time when Europe was affected by the decline of reli¬
gious perception, loss of the meaning of life and general depar¬
ture from the church which permanently changed the character
of European society, many reform-modernist assemblies formed
whose aim was to restore and encourage a return to spiritual life
and to modernize it. Equally Czech Catholic Modernism, reli¬
gious-reform formation of the practical nature with its goal to re¬
form the church, trying to overcome a chasm between modern
man and historical Christianity, made an effort for true religion
in the society. The Czech scientist, philosopher, sociologist,
teacher, critic, politician and journalist T. G.
doubtedly belongs to the most important personalities of Czech
history, was very interested in religious questions and therefore it
would be surprising and illogical if he were not enthusiastic
about the newly-established Catholic Modernism. Exactly the re¬
lationship between T. G.
ernism at the turn of the 20th century is the topic I have chosen
for my dissertation.
To achieve the set task I decided to proceed in chronological
order. The work is divided into four chapters: Chapter two (T. G.
Masaryk)
opinions and chapter three (Czech Catholic Modernism) presents
the assembly of Catholic Modernism, its aims, personalities and
leading representatives views. The crux of the dissertation is the
comprehensive chapter four (T. G.
ism) which brings in the actual synthesis of the relationship of T.

and straggle at the turn of the 20th century. In this chapter I ana¬
lyse the decline of the church and the reasons for it, politiciza-
tion of the catholic movement, Masaryk s interest in Catholic
Modernism, agreements and disagreements between the two par¬
ties, the personalities of J. S.
Bouška
(Rieger s affair, Chaplains affair, Kohn s affair, Juda s affair and
suchlike). The last chapter {Conclusion) sums up the points of dis¬
agreement and the level of discrepancy between
and Catholic Modernism.
The work is based on three important editions of documents.
There are excellent editions of correspondence between the
catholic modernists, papal encyclical Pascendi
about the ban of the catholic movement and a collection of es¬
says about Masaryk s personality. As far as the representatives are
concerned, Masaryk s publications are numerous

runs especially the magazine articles (see bibliography). Other
valuable sources are not only contemporary newspaper and
magazine essays but also general texts and papers. For the studied
material there is also a lot of archival material: in the Archive of
Masaryk s Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Re¬
public, the State Central Archives in Prague and the Literary Ar¬
chive PNP in Prague. In recent time a series of historical, theo¬
logical, philosophical and political studies by the Czech authors
emerged.
Although

drew hope, confidence and courage from Christianity, both par¬
ties did not have a lot in common. Even though the first phase

moral, philosophical, political, theological and historical. Moral
difference of opinion provoked numerous affairs at the turn of
the 20th century and as pointed out also by the combative editor

from the insufficient education of priests and shallow anchorage
of the catholic movement in European modernism; political rea¬

torical level of disagreement was the catholic past but also Ma-
saryk s disapproval with present church development. From all
the reasons I have put forward it was the first one which contrib¬
uted most to the splitting. The Czech countries have definitely
lost an interesting and possibly productive cooperation.
