By offensive weaponry (arms) we imply individual employment means designed for defeating an

First finds of special arms on the territory of Altai date back to Eneolithic. In the Bronze

The period studied in this work,

is characterised by further development of Altai
population s individual means of destruction, creation and borrowing of new forms of arms, their
unprecedented typological diversity and spreading across vast territory of Eurasia. The study covers
the territories of Lesostepnoi, Gorny and Mongolian Altai.
In general, for studying offensive weaponry of Altai medieval population the author collected

important comparative information the author analyzed graphic sources: petroglyphs, sculptures, objects
of toreutics as well as written sources data taken from translations by Turkic and Chinese narrative
monuments.

Classification of offensive panoply and its typological analysis let the author trace evolution
of arms, present characteristics oftheir functional elements, find out ethnocultural traditions in constructing
and stylingmilitary means.

The only types of long-range combat arms which were in possession of medieval Altai warriors
were bows and arrows, perfection of which was of prior concern. The development of long-range combat
arms based on Hum tradition came to an end in the «great migration» epoch. Production of bows
and arrows by Gorny Altai nomads acquired new peculiar features which gave impulse to formation
of new Turkic tradition that spread along the steppe belt of Eurasia in early middle ages. At the,

Altai was of innovative character, attainment of which was the basis for further
modernization. Eearly middle ages were marked by establishment of unitary Mongolian tradition
in bows and arrows production on the territory of Altai that ended evolution of these types of arms.
Ramming arms were presented by pikes and forks. In the «great migration» epoch people
employed two types of pikes: «easy» and armour-piercing. These arms were produced in Gorny Altai
on the basis of Saraiatian and Hsienbiysk tradition. In the early middle ages various spears were used.

culture is the most representative as it includes not only pikes, but forks. Their presence on the territory
of Lesostepnoi Altai is due to the influence pf military traditions of nomads from eastern part of Central
Asia. In the evolution of Srostkinsk set of spears one can see clear differentiation into overspecialized
and universal types of ramming arms with predominant importance of armour-piercing means.
In developed middle ages Altai warriors continued to employ all types of spears known before, but
they preferred pikes aimed at fighting with light-armed enemy. Material finds together with graphic
materials and written sources data prove the leading role of the spear as cavalry arms among other
types of Altai population s offensive weaponry.

a number of new types of close combat arms appeared in Altai such as sabres, one- and
two-blade swords, battleaxes, jacks. Part of them was invented by Altai armourers; part was borrowed
as the result of political and military contacts with other nations. In developed middle ages local
developmental trends lost their positions and Mongolian tradition came into power with its peculiarity
in sabre and offensive arms production.
Combined study of armour and arms of each archaeological culture let the author single out
weaponry complexes characteristic of it and specify combat organization of Altai medieval population.
The main parts of it were.heavy and medium cavalry. Light oavalry (in pre^Mongolian times), light
