When I first began researching material for this book I was struck not by the scarcity of references,
as I had fully expected, but rather by their confusing and contradictory nature.
It can be fairly argued that much valuable information, including official documents, has only been
released in recent years and was unavailable when most works on British armour in North Africa were
published. However, I am certain that some researchers at least have fallen into the trap of filling the
gaps in our knowledge with fanciful yet appealing theories, the contents of which have been repeated
so many times over the intervening years mat they are now, in many cases, accepted as fact.
Wherever possible I have endeavoured to use primary sources, preferring photographs, film stills
and film. The Wartime Diaries of the units involved
-
although not all are available
-
were invaluable
aids to building up a more complete picture. The accounts of veterans are surprisingly accurate and
detailed, many even describing the colours used to camouflage their tanks. There remain many holes
in our knowledge and where I have been forced to speculate or fall back on a secondary source I have
tried to make this obvious. I do not profess this to be a definitive work and would be grateful to hear
from readers who can add to the information presented here.
Of the authors I did consult I would like to mention B.T. White, William E.
Platz
and George Bradford.
Their work was carried out when little or no reference material was available, there was no internet to
communicate with like minded souls half way across the world or to delve into the archives of National
Libraries and Museums nor indeed any computers to collate the masses of information compiled. I would

I would also like to thank the young men who manned those tanks in the unbearable heat of the
