Summary
In the early Middle Ages, at first as a dukedom and lat¬
er on as a kingdom, Croatia was a sovereign and an in¬
dependent state. From

Incorporated in the renewed Yugoslavia, arisen from
the antifascist movement and led by Communists with
Tito at the forefront, Croatia in this federalized and so¬
cialist state had a status of a socialist republic. As the fed¬
eral unit (Republic) it had its statehood, whose principal
representative was Croatian Parliament
this statehood was a restrained one since federal (Yugoslav)
authority of political and state administration had the up¬
per hand in all aspects of life and what they wanted had to
be done. Croats did not agree with this state. They fought
centralization and unitarianism, defended the Croatian
national identity, supported equality and "clean hands"
policy in federation and attempted to gain greater inde¬
pendence and broader rights in governing of its own de¬
velopment through changes in federal and republic's con¬
stitution. In the period of socialist Yugoslavia numerous
Croats emigrated: some for political others for econom¬
ic reasons. In both monarchist

dependent Croatian state.
The breakdown of socialist system in Europe and de¬
composition of multinational socialist states were a neces¬
sity. Breaking up of different national associations within
the USSR and Czechoslovakia in peaceful and deliberative
manner was not possible within SFRY owing to Greater
Serbian aspirations towards enlarging the not so big Ser¬
bia into a Great Serbia by the way of usurping parts of ter¬
ritories of neighboring republics. Republic of Croatia de¬
fended and fended away its state territory in an imposed
war during which Croatia suffered great human losses and
huge material damage.

described events taking place in autonomous, independent
and internationally recognized Croatia from the day it re¬
ceived its independence in

life. As a country belonging to Western European civiliza¬
tion and its cultural circle, Croatia attempts to become a
full member of the European Union and the NATO. This
book also deals quite a lot with these Croatian endeavors,
as well as with its efforts to build itself as a fully democrat¬
ic, legal and prosperous state in all of its segments, the state
in which all of its citizens will have the chance to live the
life worthy of a human being and its freedom.
