Summary
STUDENT NATURALIST SOCIETY AT THE
JAGIELLONIAN UNIVERSITY
130
YEARS OF TRADITION
(1873-2003)
In
1873
the first student societies appeared within the student association at the Jagiellonian Uni¬
versity known as the Academic Reading Room. These societies brought together students with similar
interests: naturalists and philosophers. The purpose of the first society was to popularise natural his¬
tory among university students through interesting lectures, excursions, and making available their
collection of books. On
25
March
1876
the Governor s Office located in
Lwów/Lemberg
(at that time
me capital city of
Galicia,
southern part of Poland under Austrian rale; now Lviv, Ukraine) granted
permission for the activity of the Library Society of Students of Mathematics and Natural History at
the Jagiellonian University. This, however, was the name of the student naturalist society. It was part
of the Academic Reading Room association, yet once its status was fiilly confirmed, it aimed at inde¬
pendence. Prof.
Franciszek Karliński
(1830-1906),
a well-known astronomer and meteorologist, was
nominated the first curator of the Society. Unfortunately, in the very same year the Austrian Ministry
о
Internal Affairs issued a strict regulation whereby all student organisations had to comply with new
instructions supporting the law of
1867.
Accordingly, the Society was considered illegal and the
whole formal procedure for its establishment had to be recommenced. The oldest information about
the members and activists of the Society dates from
1881/1882.
Roman Gutwinski
(1860-1932),
later
a distinguished phycologist, was one of the directors. On
17
April
1882
the Governor s Office in
Lwów/Lemberg
granted the Library Society of Students of Mathematics and Natural History at the
agiellonian University permission to recommence its activities. During the period between
4
Decem¬
ber
1881
and
14
May
1882
a number of lectures were delivered to students,
12
of them on natural
history.
No data are available about the activities of the Library Society of Students of Mathematics and
Natural History at the Jagiellonian University in the decade
1884-1894.
Three assistant researchers from the Faculty of Philosophy:
Michal
Siedlecki
(1873-1940),
who
Jater
became a zoologist and explorer as well as co-organiser of the re-established Stephen
Báthory
University in Wilno/Vilna (now Vilnius, Lithuania),
Jarosław
Lomnickí
(1873-1931),
who later
became an entomologist, zoologist and the director of the Dzieduszycki Museum in
Lwów/Lemberg,
and
Józef
Grzybowski
(1869-1922),
later a geologist, micropalaeontologist and Jagiellonian Univer-
S)ty professor, prepared the draft statute of the Student Naturalist Society. The statute was eventually
approved on
1
May
1896
by the Senate of the Jagiellonian University. The final version (approved by
tne
Governor s Office in
Lwów/Lemberg)
was written by
Grzegorz
Bobiak
(1874-1918?),
a research
assistant at the Department of Plant Anatomy and Physiology of the Jagiellonian University, later
a secondary school teacher, and Jan Szurek
(?-?).
On
31
May
1896
a general meeting was held, the
student Naturalist Society was formally established and the presiding officers were elected.

..
In the early 20th century the Society already had its own library. In the period
1908-1910
the
Naturalist Society together with other societies for students of mathematics and natural sciences
organised mass meetings to promote re-organisation of studies, in support of changes in curricula,
expansion of some departments and the establishment of new ones. In
1910
the Touring Group was
established within the Society.
Prof.
Władysław Szajnocha
(1857-1928),
acting as the curator of the Society at that time, re¬
signed the function on
6
March
1910,
and the post was taken over by Prof.
Henryk Ferdynand
Hoyer
(1864-1947),
a zoologist, comparative anatomist and medical doctor. On
12
February
1912
a mass
meeting was held and a resolution was passed according to which one should apply to the Ministry of
Religion and Education in Vienna for the approval of Marian Raciborski s
(1863-1917)
appointment
to the position of a professor at the Department of Botany of the Jagiellonian University. He was
offered this position already in
1910,
when he was still a professor of the
Lwów/Lemberg
University.
Marian
Raciborski
was a well-known botanist, an explorer and a distinguished scholar. In support of
this demand a strike was organised on
13
and
14
February
1912,
and the students chose to miss natu¬
ral history lectures and classes.
1914-1939
After World War I Poland became an independent state. The activities of the Student Naturalist
Society in the period
1920-1939
are much better documented. The names of presiding officers and
directors in that period are known. The curator at that time was Prof.
Henryk Ferdynand
Hoyer and
later that post was held by Prof.
Michał Siedlecki.
The Society had its own premises. There were four
groups, specialising in botany, zoology, nature conservation and a group responsible for organising
social life, such as get-together parties and carnival balls. The Society had a library and ran a small
shop, at least for several years. The nature conservation group was the most active one during that
period. They supported the campaign against the construction of a cable railway in the
Tatra
Moun¬
tains, organising mass meetings led by Prof.
Władysław Szafer
(1886-1970),
a founder and one of the
key activists of the nature conservation movement in Poland.
World War II
During the
Sonderaktion Krakau,
on
6
November
1939,
Prof.
Michał Siedlecki,
the curator of the
Society, and other academics were arrested by the Gestapo (German secret police). Prof.
Michał
Siedlecki
died in the concentration camp of
Sachsenhausen
on
11
January
1940.
During World War II
the Jagiellonian University did pursue its academic activity in a clandestine manner, yet the war put
an end to the activities of the Society.
Post-war years
On
12
June
1945
students of biology submitted a petition to the Senate of the Jagiellonian Uni¬
versity to recommence the activities of the Society. At the same time a new statute was drafted and
approved on
13
July
1945.
Prof.
Władysław
Szafer was appointed the curator. In late July the first
post-war elections were held. In the first months after the war the students activities were mainly
focused on cleaning jobs and searching for the missing book collection.
The next four years resembled the pre-war period: the Society had a library, published papers and
books, provided assistance in learning, organised trips, excursions, lectures as well as social life.
On
2
May
1949
the curator, Prof.
Władysław
Szafer, resigned the post, which was then given to
Prof.
Stanisław Smreczyński
(1899-1975),
a zoologist, expert in fauna studies, entomologist and
embryologist. During the general meeting held on
25
May
1949
pressure was brought upon the Soci¬
ety to join the Association of Student Societies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Science. The ge¬
ologist group within the Society became an independent organisation, known as the Student Geologist
Society. Pursuant to the decision of the Ministry of Education and Science of
30
May
1950,
all exist-
Student
Naturalist Society... 199
ing university student societies were dissolved. The collection of books belonging to the Student
Naturalist Society was divided among several departmental libraries and the remaining books were
distributed among the students.
1951-1957
In place of the dissolved Student Naturalist Society the Communist authorities organised three student
societies grouping zoologists, botanists and general biology students. These societies, centrally
governed and engaged in political and propaganda activities, were not popular among students.
1957-1981
In January
1957
student societies established
6
years before ceased to exist, which was a powerful
stimulus leading to re-establishing the Student Naturalist Society. A new statute was written and it
was approved by the Senate of the Jagiellonian University on
28
June. On
11
November
1957
a gen¬
eral meeting was held and the Student Naturalist Society was officially restored. Prof.
Jerzy Kreiner
(1906-1972)
was put in charge of the Society. In the next few years the Society focused mainly on
organising meetings (open lectures) and excursions. At those meetings, held
5-10
times a year, in¬
vited professors discussed interesting issues in the area of natural history and the participants of trips
and excursions reported their findings. Another attraction was natural history films, shown regularly.
Every year the Society organised two or three dancing parties.
In
1960
a group of
11
students made a trip abroad for the first time. They spent their holiday in
Bulgaria, studying flora in the mountains and at the Black Sea coast. That trip marked the beginning
of a new form of activities. For the next
40
years students had an excellent opportunity to engage in
research studies at holiday camps under the supervision of competent teachers.
In the
1960s
the activities of the Student Naturalist Society included regular meetings (two times
a month), visits to natural history departments and faculties, specialist courses (micro- and macro-
-photography, drawing in biology, preparation of vertebrate and invertebrate animals, preparation of
herbaria), holiday camps, excursions (most of them to the
Niepołomice
Forest near
Kraków).
Excur¬
sions led by Prof.
Bogumił Pawłowski
(1898-1971),
a well-known phytosociologist and an expert in
European mountain flora, director of the Department of Systematics and Plant Geography and of the
Botanical Garden of the Jagiellonian University, were particularly attractive for students. A most
dedicated scholar and teacher, Prof.
Pawłowski
considered these excursions his favourite form of
teaching activities. Quite famous were the meetings by the campfire, at which he organised plant-
recognition contests, followed by singing and dancing. Other events, such as drowning of the
ma¬
rzanna
(a straw figure representing winter) that celebrates the coming of the spring and potato-baking
parties, became a tradition, too. Prof.
Pawłowski
was regarded an idol by contemporary students
and, hence, was awarded the title of an honorary member of the Student Naturalist Society of the
Jagiellonian University.
Prof.
Jerzy Kreiner,
the curator of the Society, died on
28
April
1972
and was succeeded by asso¬
ciate professor
Władysław Grodziński
(1934-1988),
a specialist in environmental science. He raised
students awareness of the dangers posed to the environment. In
1975
the Society organised the first
exotic trip. Its main aim was to explore the characteristic biotopes of Venezuela and Peru. On
3-5
December
1976
the Student Naturalist Society celebrated its 80th anniversary. On
29
November
1980
another exotic expedition, organised by the Society, set off for Ceylon. During the period between
August
1980
and December
1981
the specialist activities of the Society seemed to dwindle as students
got engaged in political life. In the autumn of
1981
there was a sit-in strike at the Jagiellonian Univer¬
sity. On
13
December
1981
the Communist authorities in Poland proclaimed marshal law, putting an
end to the activities of all student organisations, including the Student Naturalist Society.
200
KOŁO PRZYRODNIKÓW STUDENTÓW UNIWERSYTETU JAGIELLOŃSKIEGO...
Recent years
The Student
Naturalist Society was formally re-registered and its statute approved in January
1983.
The later part of the
1980s
(after the end of the marshal law period) witnessed many excursions
to faraway places, which required much effort and commitment. Financial support was provided by
the University and business companies. These trips included: East Africa
83,
Trans Africa
84,
Safari
85,
and Nepal
86.
Students participated in holiday camps abroad: in Bulgaria
(1983),
Norway
(1983),
Romania
(1984).
The main aim of both exotic trips and holiday camps was to collect flora and
fauna in various habitats, to support nature observations. Rich collections were brought home and
donated to the Jagiellonian University. Other beneficiaries were secondary schools all over Poland.
These trips gave students a unique opportunity to get acquainted with wildlife and nature and to en¬
rich their knowledge, as even the best handbooks cannot replace observation
ornature.
On
3-5
April
1987
special celebrations were held to mark the 90th anniversary of the Student
Naturalist Society, attended by over
200
scholars from academic institutions all over Poland. Prof.
Władysław Grodziński,
the curator at that time, died on
8
November
1988
and Prof. Anna Marchlew-
ska-Koj took over the post. In
1989
the Society purchased a video camera; this event was of particular
importance at the time. On
18-20
April
1997
the Society celebrated its 100th anniversary.
In the last
15
years the Student Naturalist Society flourished and its activities were abundant.
Listed below are some of the activities: ornithologists took part in bird-counting projects, students
counted hoofed animals in the
Białowieża
Forest (from
1990
on). The Bat Census Decade project
began in
1992
and a new bat species, previously unknown in Poland, was discovered. Trips were
organised to explore the banks of the Biebrza River and to count swamp birds. From
1996
to
1998
students went to the
Bieszczady
Mountains to count beavers and observe their life. Foreign trips were
organised, too: several trips to Ukraine (from
1993
on), Spitsbergen
(1998),
Romania
(1999),
Mon¬
golia
(2000),
Sakhalin and the
Kurile
Islands
(2001),
the Ural Mountains and Arctic Siberia
(2002),
Kirghizstan,
Nepal and Kola Peninsula
(2003).
During those trips students collected a vast body of
materials for their master theses as well as flora and fauna specimens that were later used in the uni¬
versity herbaria or donated to museums. After a trip the participants would meet with Society mem¬
bers and supporters to report their findings; the meetings were enlivened by the show of films and
photographs.
Since
1999,
following the initiative of
Małgorzata Łagisz,
the Society has been engaged in the or¬
ganisation of the Science Promotion Workshops, a nation-wide event. In
2001
the Society began to
cooperate with the BeeVee Student Society at the Catholic University of
Nijmegen
in the Nether¬
lands.
The Society has long-established traditions. Each year the
marzanna
is drowned to celebrate the
oncoming of spring and the traditional social gathering before Christmas is attended by the Society
members, supporters as well as former members.
One of the main tasks of the Society has been to provide assistance in learning through the publi¬
cation of teaching aids. Thus, the first manuscript was published in
1910.
It was a key for determining
vertebrate animals in Poland. The last manuscript was published in
1949:
a zoology handbook con¬
taining lectures by Prof.
Stanisław Smreczyński,
with numerous illustrations.

acting as the curator of the Society at that time, re¬
signed the function on
6
March
1910,
and the post was taken over by Prof.
Henryk Ferdynand
Hoyer
(1864-1947),
a zoologist, comparative anatomist and medical doctor. On
12
February
1912
a mass
meeting was held and a resolution was passed according to which one should apply to the Ministry of
Religion and Education in Vienna for the approval of Marian Raciborski's
(1863-1917)
appointment
to the position of a professor at the Department of Botany of the Jagiellonian University. He was
offered this position already in
1910,
when he was still a professor of the
Lwów/Lemberg
University.
Marian
Raciborski
was a well-known botanist, an explorer and a distinguished scholar. In support of
this demand a strike was organised on
13
and
14
February
1912,
and the students chose to miss natu¬
ral history lectures and classes.
1914-1939
After World War I Poland became an independent state. The activities of the Student Naturalist
Society in the period
1920-1939
are much better documented. The names of presiding officers and
directors in that period are known. The curator at that time was Prof.
Henryk Ferdynand
Hoyer and
later that post was held by Prof.
Michał Siedlecki.
The Society had its own premises. There were four
groups, specialising in botany, zoology, nature conservation and a group responsible for organising
social life, such as get-together parties and carnival balls. The Society had a library and ran a small
shop, at least for several years. The nature conservation group was the most active one during that
period. They supported the campaign against the construction of a cable railway in the
Tatra
Moun¬
tains, organising mass meetings led by Prof.
Władysław Szafer
(1886-1970),
a founder and one of the
key activists of the nature conservation movement in Poland.
World War II
During the
Sonderaktion Krakau,
on
6
November
1939,
Prof.
Michał Siedlecki,
the curator of the
Society, and other academics were arrested by the Gestapo (German secret police). Prof.
Michał
Siedlecki
died in the concentration camp of
Sachsenhausen
on
11
January
1940.
During World War II
the Jagiellonian University did pursue its academic activity in a clandestine manner, yet the war put
an end to the activities of the Society.
Post-war years
On
12
June
1945
students of biology submitted a petition to the Senate of the Jagiellonian Uni¬
versity to recommence the activities of the Society. At the same time a new statute was drafted and
approved on
13
July
1945.
Prof.
Władysław
Szafer was appointed the curator. In late July the first
post-war elections were held. In the first months after the war the students' activities were mainly
focused on cleaning jobs and searching for the missing book collection.
Society. Pursuant to the decision of the Ministry of Education and Science of
30
May
1950,
all exist-
Student
Naturalist Society. 199
ing university student societies were dissolved.
Prof.
Pawłowski
was regarded 'an idol' by contemporary students
and, hence, was awarded the title of an honorary member of the Student Naturalist Society of the
Jagiellonian University.
Prof.
Jerzy Kreiner,
the curator of the Society, died on
28
April
1972
and was succeeded by asso¬
ciate professor
Władysław Grodziński
(1934-1988),
a specialist in environmental science. He raised
students' awareness of the dangers posed to the environment. In
1975
the Society organised the first
exotic trip. Its main aim was to explore the characteristic biotopes of Venezuela and Peru. On
3-5
December
1976
the Student Naturalist Society celebrated its 80th anniversary. On
29
November
1980
another 'exotic' expedition, organised by the Society, set off for Ceylon.
200
KOŁO PRZYRODNIKÓW STUDENTÓW UNIWERSYTETU JAGIELLOŃSKIEGO.
Recent years
The Student
Naturalist Society was formally re-registered and its statute approved in January
1983.
The later part of the
1980s
(after the end of the marshal law period) witnessed many excursions
to faraway places, which required much effort and commitment. Financial support was provided by
the University and business companies. These trips included: East Africa
'83,
Trans Africa
'84,
Safari
'85,
and Nepal
'86.
Students participated in holiday camps abroad: in Bulgaria
(1983),
Norway
(1983),
Romania
(1984).
The main aim of both exotic trips and holiday camps was to collect flora and
fauna in various habitats, to support nature observations. Rich collections were brought home and
donated to the Jagiellonian University. Other beneficiaries were secondary schools all over Poland.
These trips gave students a unique opportunity to get acquainted with wildlife and nature and to en¬
rich their knowledge, as even the best handbooks cannot replace observation
ornature.
On
3-5
April
1987
special celebrations were held to mark the 90th anniversary of the Student
Naturalist Society, attended by over
200
scholars from academic institutions all over Poland. Prof.
Władysław Grodziński,
the curator at that time, died on
8
November
1988
and Prof. Anna Marchlew-
ska-Koj took over the post. In
1989
the Society purchased a video camera; this event was of particular
importance at the time. On
18-20
April
1997
the Society celebrated its 100th anniversary.
In the last
15
years the Student Naturalist Society flourished and its activities were abundant.
Listed below are some of the activities: ornithologists took part in bird-counting projects, students
counted hoofed animals in the
Białowieża
Forest (from
1990
on). The Bat Census Decade project
began in
1992
and a new bat species, previously unknown in Poland, was discovered. Trips were
organised to explore the banks of the Biebrza River and to count swamp birds. From
1996
to
1998
students went to the
Bieszczady
Mountains to count beavers and observe their life. Foreign trips were
organised, too: several trips to Ukraine (from
1993
on), Spitsbergen
(1998),
Romania
(1999),
Mon¬
golia
(2000),
Sakhalin and the
Kurile
Islands
(2001),
the Ural Mountains and Arctic Siberia
(2002),
Kirghizstan,
Nepal and Kola Peninsula
(2003).
During those trips students collected a vast body of
materials for their master theses as well as flora and fauna specimens that were later used in the uni¬
versity herbaria or donated to museums. After a trip the participants would meet with Society mem¬
bers and supporters to report their findings; the meetings were enlivened by the show of films and
photographs.
Since
1999,
following the initiative of
Małgorzata Łagisz,
the Society has been engaged in the or¬
ganisation of the Science Promotion Workshops, a nation-wide event. In
2001
the Society began to
cooperate with the BeeVee Student Society at the Catholic University of
Nijmegen
in the Nether¬
lands.
The Society has long-established traditions. Each year the
marzanna
is drowned to celebrate the
oncoming of spring and the traditional social gathering before Christmas is attended by the Society
members, supporters as well as former members.
One of the main tasks of the Society has been to provide assistance in learning through the publi¬
cation of teaching aids. Thus, the first manuscript was published in
1910.
It was a key for determining
vertebrate animals in Poland. The last manuscript was published in
1949:
a zoology handbook con¬
taining lectures by Prof.
Stanisław Smreczyński,
with numerous illustrations. |
