in his time, Richard Nixon was
reviled, mourned, respected, and scruti¬
nized and earned a uniquely complex and
fascinating place in the American political
panorama of the last four decades. Yet
despite the phenomenal interest in the
Nixon personality, the tendency to view
him as a psychological aberration, a neu¬
rotic who somehow attached himself to
the political mainstream, fails to explain
his continuing hold on the American
consciousness. In this definitive volume,
Herbert Parmet makes the case that, even
more than icons such as Dwight D.
Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy,
Richard Nixon has emerged as the quin¬
tessential postwar American politician.
From his entry into politics in
1946
to
Watergate and his resignation, Richard
Nixon believed himself to represent the
silent majority that epitomized the real
America, and he hoped to revive faith in
capitalism, traditionalism, and the
American dream.
Yet the age of Nixon took a far more
complicated course. Drawing from an
array of sources that includes newly
opened files from the Nixon White
House, access to the portion of Nixon s
papers not available to other writers, and
in-depth interviews with the former presi¬
dent himself, Herbert Parmet presents a
convincing portrait not only of the man
but of the nation, its politics, and how
Nixon shaped them. Fresh and chal¬
lenging insights are brought to bear upon
this analysis through interviews with
adversaries such as
Alger Hiss
and Pat
Brown, as well as friends such as Bob
Haldeman, John Ehrlichman, Walter
(continued on back flap)
(continuedfrom front flap)
Annenberg,
Bob Abplanalp,
Bebe Rebozo,
John Connally, Egil Krogh, and Julie and
David Eisenhower.
Herbert Parmet s narrative explores
the circumstances that ultimately created
compatibility between the American
people and the man who ended his career
in controversy. To read this book is to
have many of one s assumptions about
Richard Nixon revised. In more ways
than are generally realized, Richard
Nixon embodied the post-Great
Depression/postwar ethos that fueled the
good, affluent society. How his relation¬
ship to that ethos became disastrously
complex and unmanageable, and how the
effects of the Nixon era continue to be
felt, are the questions that drive this
examination. As Herbert Parmet states,
[Nixon] harnessed the unease that lay
just below the surface of the celebratory
blessings of the American existence. To
understand Richard Nixon is to attain a
more useful comprehension of the thrust
of our political future.
Herbert S. Parmet is the author of
several books, including Eisenhower and
the American Crusades; Jack: The Struggles
of John F. Kennedy; and JFK: The
Presidency of John F. Kennedy.
