Everyday lives of the members of the school-community in the 1st
Juliusz Sło¬
wacki
State Secondary School at
Przemyśl
between
1918
and
1939
may be cove¬
red in many aspects of existence. By "school-community" it is to be meant not
only teachers and pupils but all who had indirect or direct influence on what as
taking place at the school in the period under discussion: parents, staff, school
inspectors, school visitors and others. Through such extending this notion it is po¬
ssible to draw attention to actual, non-anonymous people, their motives and deep
convictions, the attitude of mind and their faith, and consequently to determine
from the norm, just to discover through that specificity what is general and normal.
It couldn't be forgotten either that the "heroes" under discussion acted under the
influence of such factors as moral values, perception of reality and the system
existing in it, interrelation between them and other social groups, having taken in
the social structure of the school roles requiring of them specific behaviour, clo¬
thing, customs, attitudes or even language. Their world, by all appearances not too
extensive, limited to the period of twenty years and its population, was in a sense a
microcosm governed by its own laws and rules. On the other hand the school
community was neither isolated nor hermetic but affected by actual housing condi¬
tion in a municipality as that of
Przemyśl
in the
1
920s and 30s, with all pluses and
minuses concerning buildings and their surroundings, and by the socioeconomic
factors (differences in the financial and housing situation between groups exami¬
ned). It is only in this wider context that it is possible to see the problem of the
perception of the school role by the local community and of its participation in the
formation of the reality of everyday lives of inhabitants of
Przemyśl.
Thus, an
attempt has been made to answer the question how the history of the quotidian
existence and experiences of a group examined, in the context of actual events,
affected larger structures. On the one hand the community examined was in a
sense typical, showing many characteristics in common with other contemporary
communities of secondary school, on the other hand it constituted a very specific,
local entity, owing to the conditions of living standards, development and financial
situation of people. This may justify the title Brilliance of greyness. accepted
for what is usual, ordinary, sometimes even commonplace
-
hence grey, to which
normally one does not attach great importance. However, there are so many inte¬
resting shades
ofthat
greyness that its brilliance occasionally attracts more than
what seems to be great and unique, as it happens in everyday life.
Therefore this paper has been divided into to the fallowing chapters on diffe¬
rent topics.

had most effected on the school as a whole;

Forms of activity and making use of time by Polish school between WWI and

Significance of religion in everyday lives (Roman Catholicism evidently affec¬
ted the existence of the school community members in quite different way than
Judaism or Greek Catholicism);
9.
Cooperation between home and school as a certain novelty in the history of the
educational system in Polish territories

resulting from the parents influence on school life;
10.
Social questions as illness, medical service and death in the life of the seconda¬
ry school community and the attempts to take attitudes towards them;
11.
Interference of the contemporary school authorities in the social life of pupils
and teachers.
Each of those chapters has in a sense a very local quality, on the basis of the
specific life realities of an actual school, but on the other hand they could be illu¬
strations of the existence of the typical school with Polish as a language of instruc¬
tion in Poland between WW I and WW II. Only one chapter refers to a chain of
the strikingly regional events in which the community of the 1st Secondary School
at
Przemyśl
was involved as a link like many others in the educational system on
the eastern borderland of the Polish state during regaining its independence. It is
the Polish-Ukrainian war of
1918-1919
the effect of which has been shown on
relations between Poles and Jews, how very inflammatory during military opera¬
tion.
This paper does not pretend to exhaust the subject of everyday life in the
1st
Juliusz Słowacki
State Secondary School at
Przemyśl
between WW I and WW II.
Though that period is not too long, many difficulties may be encountered when
doing research on that subject. According to the author, his main aim had been to
establish the frame of reference for similar research on school environments which
so far were dealt with only in monographic or contributorial publications from the
viewpoint of the classical historiography, presenting only some specificity in activi¬
ties of particular communities. The present paper also suggests the continuation of
the studies of the history of everyday life at
Przemyśl
-
a town with rich history
and long tradition
-
so far only initiated in a confined dimension.
