Wacław Bolesław Cybulski
was born in Warsaw on October
6, 1901
in a noble and patriotic family.
His ancestors fought in the Polish insurrections and
Wacław
himself took part in the war against the
Bolsheviks where he was wounded. He interrupted his studies again to fight in the Silesian insurrec¬
tion. He admired the region and people so much that after graduating as a chemical engineer from the
Departament
of Chemistry of Warsaw Technical Univerity in
1925
he decided to move there.

In
1925
he began to work on the organization of the Barbara Experimantal Mine, where he remained
until his death in
1973.
In fact this was the first research institute in Poland. Cybulski devoted himself
to investigations on methane and coal dust explosions with great fervour since he was familiar with
the moral worth of the people and their hard work in the coal mines of the Silesian coal basin.
In
1940
during the Second World War he was in the Polish Army in France where he was wounded.
He then went to Britain where he served in the Polish Army till the end of the war. In
1942
at the
request of the British authorities he was seconded to the Scientific Research Establishment in Buxton,
where he worked on explosives.
In
1946
he returned to Poland and became the director of the Barbara Experimantal Mine in
Mikołów.
In
1948
he became Assistan Professor at the Academy of Mining and Metallurgy in Cracow, where
he lectured on blasting materials and gas and dust hazards. In
1954
he became Associate Professor. At
the Silesian Technical Univesity in
Gliwice
he organised the Department of Mining Safety and took
over the Chair.
The scientific work done by Cybulski covers a wide spectrum of problems concerning disasters from
explosions, explosives, initiators, electric blasting and dusts harmful to health. His accomplishments
in this field are well known in Poland and abroad, where he was regarded as an eminent scientific
authority especially in regard to research on mine explosions and on the safety of blasting operations.
Cybulski worked on the problem of coal dust explosions for more than
40
years. As a result he carried
out the world s most extensive investigations on the role of the principal parameters in the explosions
of coal dust.
Years of research on the control of explosions led Cybulski to develop effective types of rock dust
and water barriers as well as working out strategies for using them. Cybulski s classical papers have
served as a basis for the classification of seams as to the danger of coal dust explosions and also for
all the regulations concerning measures to combat this danger. The work on methane explosions has
provided a basis of classsification of seams in regard to this hazard. He was the initiator of the
introduction of automatic methanometry
m
mines.
As a result of his study on the safety of explosives in the presence of methane and coal dust Cybulski
discovered the most dangerous blastic conditions and developed original methods for testing mining
explosives. He developed most of the explosives used in Poland for coal mining. Cybulski was the
author of
150
scientific papers published
ín
Polish and foreign journals. He also edited

books. His
book Coal dust explosions and their suppression is also published in English. This is the first and up
to today the only book on this topic. He was a member of the Polish Academy of Science.
Wacław
Cybulski died on March
31 1973
in Katowice and is buried in the
Powązki
Cemetery in
Warsaw.

Wacław Bolesław Cybulski
was born in Warsaw on October
6, 1901
in a noble and patriotic family.
