INTRODUCTION Budeşti (mun. of Chişinău, Rep. of Moldova) was introduced into archeological - historic literature in 1954 and subsequent years when the Santana de Mureş-Cernja- chov-type settlement and necropolis were found and their study began. Previously there had been no known archeologically relevant spot on the territory of the respec¬ tive village and its surroundings. The identification of the Budeşti archeological complex was due to an accident. In early June 1954, when a farm complex was being built about 1.5 km south-west of the village and about 120 m north of the Chişinău-Vadul lui Vodă road, three interment tombs containing inventory objects were discovered. When Emanuil Rikman was informed of Ulis accidental discovery, he immediately started to study the place and found that the territory given to construction contained a Cernjachov-type necropolis, while around it he found the remains of an extended settlement of the same period. The Budeşti site came under scientific investigation in the summer of 1954; the research was conducted by a group of scholars from the Chişinău Institute of Archeol¬ ogy and History (headed by E. Rikman), who proceeded to excavating two plots on the area of the necropolis. In the following years the archeological investigations were conducted on both sites, and until 1957 23 plots and sections were studied. After three excavation campaigns (between 1955 and 1957) undertaken by E. Rik- man in the Budeşti Sântana-Cernjachov settlement, a total area of 1312 m2 was un¬ covered, which brought into light nine surface dwellings, a pottery oven, an iron-ore reduction oven, two open-air hearths, 27 household and storage pits, as well as a rich body of archeological material. More salvaging archeological excavations were conducted in the Budeşti settle¬ ment in the summer of 1973 by G. Čebotarenko and T. Ščerbakova during the con¬ struction of the Chişinău-Bender highway. The research concentrated in the western part of the settlement, which was affected by the road construction works and repre¬ sented a large plot measuring 1132 m2. The vestiges of three surface constructions were unearthed, two of which were equipped with fire facilities, a semicellar, an iron- ore reduction oven and 32 storage and other types of pits; a large amount of ceramic and a number of iron, glass, bone and stone objects were found, too. As far as the cemetery is concerned, it was given more attention than the settle¬ ment, and its perimeter was excavated to an extent that was quite considerable for the time. After four archeological campaigns (1954-1957) an area of 2830 m2 was unearthed along the necropolis s perimeter and more than 360 tombs were discovered, which supplied to the scientists interesting data regarding the burial rites, funeral practices, the material and spiritual cultures of the population buried in that place, which could be extended to the entire Santana de Mureş-Cernjachov culture. 254 The main results of the archeological investigations conducted on the settlement and necropolis under discussion were presented by E. Rikman in four preliminary excavation reports, the first one (the 1954 campaign) being published in an abridged version in 1958 (Rikman, 1958). In a series of articles written in the following years E. Rikman published and analyzed the most important data and materials collected at the Budeşti archeological complex, taking up a number of issues that those discover¬ ies raised (Rikman, 1960; Rikman, 1960a; Rikman, 1962). In a thorough study the scholar described the fonerai rites and rituals practiced in the necropolis under discussion, underlining at the same time the ethnic components of the population buried there (Rikman, 1964). In 1967 a monographic paper by the same scholar was published in Chişinău, Pamjatnìk velikogo pereselenija národov: po raskopkam poselenija і mogìl nìka Černjachovskoj kuľtury u sela Budešty (A monument of the great migration of peo¬ ples: the excavation of the settlement and necropolis of the Černjachov culture, found in Budeşti), which contained the materials discovered in the settlement and the cem¬ etery. Besides a description of the archeological sites on the settlement and an analysis of the materials collected there and in the cemetery, the book also contained the body of discoveries made in the cemetery, accompanied by 49 photographs and drawings of tomb layouts and inventory objects. Several years later, E. Symonovič published a review of the paper Pamjatnìk ve¬ likogo pereselenija národov, making a number of folly grounded critical observations on the monograph (Symonovič, 1970). E. Symonovic demonstrated that E. Rikman classified the ceramic based on inaccurate principles, and the ceramic typology had its value reduced even further because the ceramic material was not used systematically in its entirety but only whole vessels were used instead. The catalogue of cemetery discoveries, too, was not drawn according to scientific rigor, E. Symonovič believed, and the tombs classification was also not grounded. The Kiev scholar also spotted multiple discrepancies between the text, the charts and figures; he also observed that the extremely small scale at which the ceramic was presented, as well as the poor quality of many photographs and drawings, reduced further still Hie value of E. Rik- man s monograph. We would like to mention with regard to these critical observations that not all the materials collected in this archeological site were published in E. Rikman s mono¬ graphic paper on the Santana monument in Budeşti, which he wrote based on the discoveries made during the excavation campaigns of 1954-1957. While the majority of iron, stone, bone, clay, and glass objects were analyzed, a great part of the ceramic material was new. The whole vessels and a negligible amount of ceramic fragments, originating mainly in the necropolis, were presented. The ceramic from иге settle¬ ment, which was fragmented, was described only statistically and was not published. The ceramic material collected in the Sântana Budeşti settlement during the 1973 campaign was also new except for several pieces. The results of the salvaging investigation of 1973 were presented by G. Čebotarenko and T. Sčerbakova in a scant and confusing preliminary excavation report published in an abridged version in the following year. 255
