spiritual communities. The United States is a country in which numerous diverse religious communities
coexist
beliefs of immigrants
Constitution. In this environment, religions such as
preexisting religions
established themselves and gained converts. The influence of religious communities highlights the fragile
separation of religion and government
increasingly pertinent as future developments in science and technology challenge many peoples spiritual
and religious beliefs. As society and religion in the United States continue to develop and impact one
another, the very experience of religion in America will change.
Each chapter in Religion in America, a volume in Facts On File s new American Experience series, begins
with an essay that describes the religious themes and developments of that time. A chronology of events
follows this essay. Each chapter closes with a section of excerpts
correspondence, and book passages. Included in this book are the words of Quaker leader William Penn,
civil rights champion Martin Luther King, Jr., writer and Holocaust survivor
others who have influenced religious and spiritual discourse in the United States. An appendix of
documents includes such primary source materials as the Maryland Act Concerning Religion, the First
Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and the Preamble to the Constitution of the Jewish Theological
Seminary. Also included are capsule biographies of
notes, a bibliography, and an index. More than
experience in the United States.
