Understanding American government and politics is written
specifically for A2 level students and covers the subject in a clear
and accessible style. It closely follows the syllabuses of the three
main examination boards (AQA, Edexcel and OCR).
After setting American politics in its social and economic context,
the book provides an introduction to, and analysis of, the
American Constitution and the distribution of power within the
federal system. It considers the executive branch
up of the presidency, the presidential administration and the
bureaucracy
judiciary. The book considers the role of American political
parties and pressure groups, and the nature of elections,
electioneering and voting behaviour. The first administration
under George W. Bush, the terrorist attacks of
the invasion of Iraq are included, giving students an
understanding of the nature of presidential power. There is also
an analysis of the Bush v. Kerry contest.
This new edition provides an opportunity to expand and update
this widely used book which is popular with students, teachers
and examiners. It is the first up-to-date assessment of US
government and politics written since the
new section on political culture and includes a new chapter on
civil liberties and civil rights.

Understanding American government and politics is written
