three decades have been the dominance of theory-based interpretative discourse and cul¬
tural studies contextualizations. Both have greatly energized literary studies, but at a cost.
In What s the Import? Kerry McSweeney critiques such readings of Romantic, Victorian, and
nineteenth-century American poems. He proposes and exemplifies an aesthetic or intrin¬
sic critical model rooted in literary-historical contextualization, arguing that the determi¬
nation of meanings is only one of the qualities required for full engagement with a poem.
What s the Import? is a significant contribution to the current debates in North America
about the state and direction of English studies and the teaching of literature in general.
