The Aerial Fight over the Town of
Bochnia

During the Second World War combat against Nazi Germany took place not only
in the front lines on land, at sea or in the air. The German occupation of many
countries resulted in creating and developing underground resistance movements
on their territories. The necessity of fighting partisans involved major forces on the
German side. Drops of supplies provided by the allied special duty squadrons were
of great significance. Such flights were also made to distant Poland in order to
support
Armia Krajowa
(the Home Army) which was fighting there at the time, and
which was one of the most powerful armed resistance forces of occupied Europe.
These flights were particularly dramatic during the Warsaw Uprising in August and
September
1944.
When Stalin imposed prohibition against landing on the territories
occupied by Russia, British, South African and Polish aircrews had to cover the
distance of
1500
km in their
Halifaxes
and Liberators to reach fighting Warsaw from
their bases in southern Italy. These missions proved to be very difficult and they
exhausted the aircrews both physically and mentally, as the latter flew most of the
way over the territories occupied by the enemy. During these flights substantial loss
was incurred both in the number of aircraft and their crews. Altogether,

aircraft
were lost over Warsaw and

were lost over southern Poland.
Wojciech
Krajewski is an aviation archaeologist who works in the Polish Military
Museum in Warsaw. He is engaged in explaining the fate of the aircraft and the
crews shot down during the war. The book written by Krajewski recounts in detail
one such episode of the air warfare over Poland. So far, it has been the most
comprehensive and the most recent attempt to portray the events related to shooting
down Liberator KG890, GR-S and the crew of F/Lt
Zbigniew
Szostak in the night
of 14th/15th August
1944.
This crew is said to have been one of the best crews of
ISSÒ"1
Polish
Special
Duties Flight. It set out for its next mission over Warsaw from
the
Brindisi base
in Italy. It successfully reached its destination and dropped its load
of supplies. On the way back, the Liberator was detected by a radar station over the
Niepołomice
Forest
(Puszcza Niepołomicka)
and intercepted by a German night
fighter from the NJG

night fighter squadron. After a fierce fight that lasted
several minutes, the Polish aircrew was shot down. Its burning aircraft exploded just
above the ground over the village of
Nieszkowice Wielkie,
south of
Bochnia.
All
the seven members of the crew died due to the fact that they bailed out too low. The
catastrophe and the fate of the crew caught the interest of the local
Armia Krajowa
unit. Three men had a significant part in the events that were about to happen. These
people were
Stanisław
Sasak, a school teacher and the commander of an
Armia
Krajowa
outpost,
Stanisław Kapusta,
a parish priest, and Stefan
Sękowski,
owner
of a neighbouring estate. It was these three people who organised a decent burial of
the Polish crew in the neighbouring cemetery in
Pogwizdów
on 17th August
1944.
The funeral was attended by the partisans of
Armia Krajowa
and by many
inhabitants of surrounding
vñlages.
After the war, the crew's remains were exhumed
and transported to the Commonwealth War Cemetery, which is part of the
Rakowicki Cemetery in
Kraków,
where they lie at rest.
The aircraft wreckage was disassembled by the local people and utilised on their
farms. Its pieces can also be found in several museums, private collections and in
the local school.
In commemoration of the dramatic events described above, a monument was
erected at the site of the catastrophe. Memorial plaques put up in the local church
and school as well as the wooden mortuary in the
Pogwizdów
cemetery remind us
of the tragic flight. |
