I ntroduction 1
CHAPTER ONE 7
Things Fall Apart (1958): Challenging the Canon
Chapter 1 begins by looking at some early responses to Things Fall
Apart, by critics including Honor Tracy, G. D. Killam, Eustace Palmer and
A. G. Stock. Much of this work is challenged by later scholars: Oladele
Taiwo, Nahem Yousaf and C. L. Innes are important examples. The third
part of the chapter discusses the language debate which has occupied
many critics, not least Gareth Griffiths, NgügT wa Thiong o and James
Snead. Finally, the chapter examines three of the most influential feminist
readings of Things Fall Apart, by the critics Rhonda Cobham, Kirsten Holst
Petersen and Florence Stratton.
CHAPTER TWO 40
Things Fall Apart (1958): The Novel and Nigeria
Continuing the discussion, this chapter addresses two key historical
contexts for Achebe s first novel. The first part examines the novel s
turn of the Century setting, with five distinctive readings by Robert
Wren, Raisa Simola, Herbert Ekwe Ekwe, Neil ten Kortenaar and
Richard Begam. The second part views Things Fall Apart as a text
reflecting the debates of Nigerian independence: the three critics
discussed are Chinua Achebe himself, Ode Ogede and Romanus Okey
Muoneke.
CHAPTER THREE 69
No Longer at Ease (1960)
This chapter begins by comparing early and later criticism of Wo Longer
at Ease. A key point of discussion in the first part is the complex structure
of intertextual allusion in Achebe s novel. The work of Arthur Ravenscroft,
David Carroll, Philip Rogers and Arnd Witte are the examples selected.
vii
viii CONTENTS
The second part goes on to explore some of the historical contexts of
the novel, through the critics Umelo Ojinmah, Michael Valdez Moses and
Simon Gikandi.
CHAPTER FOUR 93
Arrow of God (1964)
The discussion of Achebe s third novel begins with the author s own
account of Arrow of God as an attempt to revaluate my culture . Through
the critics Robert Wren, Charles Nnolim and C. L. Innes, it goes on to
explore the novel s key intertexts and influences. The chapter concludes
with three quite different critical readings, by K. Indrasena Reddy, David
Carroll and Tejumola Olaniyan.
CHAPTER FIVE 113
A Man of the People (1966) and Girls at War (1972)
This chapter begins by exploring the background to A Man ofthe People
through Achebe s biographer, Ezenwa Ohaeto. Two early, political read¬
ings are offered, by Bernth Lindfors and NgügT wa Thiong o. The chapter
then explores three more recent treatments of the novel, by Joe Obi,
Onyemaechi Udumukwu and Jago Morrison. The final part of the chapter
deals with Achebe s 1972 Short story collection Girls at War and Other
Stories, exploring the responses of critics C. L. Innes, Umelo Ojinmah
and Ode Ogede.
CHAPTER SIX 137
Anthills of the Savannah (1987)
The discussion begins, using Achebe s own commentary, by considering
the changed sense of the author s role that informs the writing of Anthills
of the Savannah. It then compares three different, political readings of the
novel, by Simon Gikandi, Supriya Nair and Neil ten Kortenaar. The final
part of the chapter examines the feminist response to Achebe s fifth novel,
through the critics Ifi Amadiume, Rose Acholonu and Elleke Boehmer.
