Czech-Slovene and Slovene-
-czech cultural contacts
in the
19™
century.
lhe
book describes the cultural
contacts between the Czechs and Slovenes which, at the end of the
18th and first half of the 19th century (especially up to
1848,
and, with
some limitations, also up to the beginning of the constitutional era in
the Hapsburg Monarchy,
1861),
concentrated mainly on literary contacts
among individual key protagonists of the emerging Czech and Slovene
culture. These contacts existed within the reference frame impressed on
Central Europe by Catholic Reformation and recatholicization at the end
°f the 16th and first decades of the 17th century (suppression of Prot-
estantism in Inneraustrian countries and among the Slovene-speaking
objects of the Crown after
1598;
decomposition of the historical Czech
nation after the battle of
Bílá Hora
near Prague in
1621),
and, from 18th
century on, by the increasingly prominent new patterns of thought
-
es¬
pecially rationalism, as well as enlightment and enlightened despotism
under the rule of Joseph II in Hapsburg countries. In the period after
me Napoleon Wars all these were joined by a distinctly Central Euro¬
pean mentality

and images when many people, after an unusually and uncontrol¬
lably dynamic period at the turn from 18th to 19th century, searched for
reference and bonds, and these were created in social institutions such
as religion, family, homeland and honour. This created the complex of
]deas and images in the period between the end of wars with »the little
Corsican« and the Spring of Nations: peace, tranquillity and measure,

honour, humility and respect of authority (as imposed by God), family,
retreat from all intellectual, emotional and sensual extremes, (in Cen¬
tral Europe) Catholic (right) faith.
Besides that, due to the political lethargy of the restoration that ruled
the Hapsburg Monarchy after
1815
under Metternich and
Sedlnický
and
then gradually faded towards the Spring of Nations, the bourgeoisie in
Cisleithan countries focused primarly onto the cultural, private and so¬
ciable side of social existence which reflected in the period of bidermay-
er in the culture of emerging salons, in the development of new musical
forms, later trademarks of the bidermayer bourgeoisie and its way of
thinking
-
lied/lieder, light salon music, waltz
-,
in dance culture, but
it also left a trace in the dynamic development of crafts and arts whose
products ornamented the flats of the bourgeoisie (painting, glass work,
carpentry,...).
All this fundamentally determined the mental course among the
Czech and Slovene renascence protagonists of the 19th century. With the
exception of the older generation of scholars (Josef
Dobrovský, Jernej
Kopitar),
under the influence of rationalism, they were shaped mostly
by ideas of romantic nationalism. This applied especially to the Slovenes
Prešeren
and
Čop,
and undoubtedly to the circles around the Czechs
Josef
Jungmann
and
František Palacký.
National renascence was a pe¬
riod when new emerging nations bore through national identification,
in the case of most Slavic nations, primarily with language and literature
and the entities they formulated; nation (and its possible, but not neces¬
sary attribute
-
the state) first constituted through the language of the
nation s literature. The language of the nation and the literature in this
language were the symbols that made a nation an independent entity,
and writings in literary history and linguistics represented the type of
cultural communication where national identification with and in the
language, and its literature, could be perceived as nationally formative.
Literary-historical reflection placed literature in the reference frame of
the emerging romantic nationalist thought and added to it the formative
and nation-preserving (nation-defensive) function. Literary-historical
writing was thus in the period of Czech and Slovene national renascence
-
as long as the reception of literary texts and their metatexts was deter¬
mined by the notion of literature as the constitutive element of national
identification
-
always connotated with the formative and nation-pre¬
serving function of literature itself. Slovene and Czech renascence pro¬
tagonists shaped this complex of ideas also in regard to the very dynam¬
ic German nationalism and its philosophy that language
=
nation, in the
first decades of the 19th century. Here, the idealistic philosophy (of lan¬
guage) by
Johann
Gottlieb
Fichte
(but also J. Grimm, W.
von Humboldt,
O.L.Jahn
and
E.M.
Arndt)
came to the fore; they shaped the premise im¬
portant for the creation of the modern Czech and Slovene nation that the
language of a nation is the determinant that differentiates its holder un-
mistakeably from foreign speakers. When
Fichte
speaks about »the only

common trait of Germanhood « that the German world uses to defy the
decay of German nationality in its merging with all things foreign he
establishes that it is the German language that »grounds the total opposi¬
tion between the Germans and other nations of Germanic descent« and
also that »it is essential Only that /people/ speak that language without
interruption, whereupon language shapes the people more than they
shape the language«.
The dicussion is broadly limited to the period between
1800
and
1849
but oversteps these time frames due to the internal logic of the historio-
graphical synthesis when it describes the contacts of Slovenes with Josef

Contacts between the Czech and Slovene renascence protagonists
and consequently, the reception of Czech literature in Slovene culture
were decisively determined by three fundamental factors:a) the state
or Humanities in Inneraustrian countries including Carinthia, Carnio-

Styria;
b)
spiritual-historical determinants
-
complexes of ideas
and images
-
and their comparabilty (affiliation with the englightened-
rationalist and romantic-nationalistic paradigm of thought) and, last but
not least, C) affinity (and/or non-affinity) of the historical protagonists to¬
wards each other. The reception moved from more or less mechaniOstOc
adoption of individual word cases, which, with the exception of
Kopitar
and
Linhart,
marked virtually all Slovene scholars who advanced intel-
ectually with the works of Josef
Dobrovský,
to constructive reflection.
In this respect, the influence of the work

to the formation of Czech national consciousness, and the text
soon aroused much attention also with Slovenes. This lasted for decades,
but the Czech manuscript did not play a particular catalyst role in the
formation of the modern Slovene nation. On the contrary, Fran Levstik s
translation did not get any wider attention, but it has surely, with all the
other Czech events, importantly contributed to the mental and notional
world of the then Slovene elite, primarily of course Levstik.
