adam_text | Dictations
On Haunted Writing
Avital Ronell
Dictations will change not only the way we read Goethe, but the way we read.
— Rainer Nagele,
Dictations shows Ronell is an imaginative, creative scholar with an inimitable style,
both rigorous and playful. As both medium and ghostbuster, Ronell uses Dictations
as a seance to convene author, reader, and critic.
—
Zeugmatically yoking the slang of pop culture with philosophical analysis, forc¬
ing the confrontation of high literature and technology or drug culture, Avital
Ronell produces sentences that startle, irritate, illuminate. At once hilarious and
refractory, her books are like no others.
—
One of the most influential of Goethe s works is one he didn t write but dictated to
a young schizoid companion. Four years after his death at the age of eighty-three,
the great poet spoke again from beyond the grave in Conversations with
lohann
life. Proclaimed by Nietzsche to be the best German book, Conversations with
Eckermann
and a host of other highly invested areas of concern for the fate of German letters
and philosophy.
The great master of German literary and scientific works from the classical and
romantic eras had dealt in ghosts in his writings and throughout his long life.
Even at birth, he was at first thought to be dead. Well after dying, he was received
by others as a phantom or phantasmatic power cluster worth listening to. Freud
frequently cited Goethe at crucial or stalled moments of his theoretical elabora¬
tions, and incessantly dreamed about him, wrestling with his invasive influence.
Goethe is seen as the undead core of German literary and theoretical production,
the basis of a poignant code of symptoms that Ronell tracks and traces.
for Ronell, emerges as the hero of haunted writing, the toxically depleted head of
the class of Goethe scholars.
Avital Ronell is a professor of German, comparative literature, and English at New
York University, where she directs the Research in Trauma and Violence project.
She is author of The Telephone Book, Crack Wars, Finitude s Score, Stupidity, and
The Test Drive.
