SUMMARY
In the postwar years of the
volume presents another
writings in Romanian historiography. They had to face the political realities connected to Romania
turning into a communist and Stalinist country and these realities found some of them fully mature
as historians who had already asserted themselves and others while they were getting their training
and assertion. Every one of them was subject to restrictions, punishments and was systematically
hunted down by the
This book reveals the relations of historians to society, to specialist professional environments
and to the political regime protected by the
prosecution documents also reveal its concern with the protection of and loyalty to this regime.
The
old school historians, be they in libraries, on building sites, as teachers or professors and office
workers, in the street and among friends or family members. By resorting to agents and well
positioned informants, they were able to learn and thus assess the way domestic and international
political events were reflected and interpreted in the opinion of various groups and the way they
were regarded by people. Making a synthesis of the historians considerations, the
its members and the rulers in power in their political decision on the masses.
It is quite interesting to know the way public opinion was decrypted and thus be able at least
to presume the

The part they played in recovering the old school historians, who were too well known for their
scientific value, proved to be particularly important as well as their being remarked thanks to their
outstanding personalities or to some charismatic qualities that were inherent in them.
Many of the old school historians resisted pressures, punishments and temptations, some others
gave in to them. Their personal attitudes were noticed by pursuers. This volume also includes
references to the collaboration with the
to as a rule as historians had no way out.

profession at a time and under a regime when obedience and compromise were given pride of
