Summary
Any attempt to intervene with the existential, biographical universe of
a personality implies thorough attention to the choice of the specific topics
and problems. This refers to, in the first place, the very personality that
becomes the object of the study. If certain important themes are revealed
and described, and the secrets of life are unveiled, such recollections acquire
a dual, individual and personal touch, referring to the individuality of the
object of the treatise, and the individuality of the personal view of the
one who attempts to reproduce and explicate the past. The above duality
of such a study brings about additional value. With that in mind, the
main method of narration in the presented project, which is devoted
to the 90-th anniversary of the Leningrad philosopher Viktor
Alexandrovich Schtoff, is the use of
Memoria.
The word
Memoria in
Latin means memory in all of its manifesta¬
tions. The powers of
Memoria
grant the cultural and historical processes
of imprinting , conservation, reproduction and forgetting of a person, a
somebody and a something (knowledge, texts). The
Memoria
possess the
resources allowing to time stamp the events, distinguish the past, the
present and the future. Thus by virtue of
Memoria
the human life ac¬
quires the time dimenstion.
Memoria
is the ability to store what has been
lived through by a person, at the same time it is the very act of recollec¬
tion, of reproduction of one s experience, knowledge, skills in a particular
narration about the events and situations of the past. To recall means to
resurrect the past, to make it part of the present. In fact, many of that
which is stored in the memory of a person, the person may recall and thus
convert into the narration about the past. Much of what is in the memory
is already forgotten, and this forgetfulness is principal for the person s very
existence and adaptation to the environment.
The biographic, auto-biographic and
historiographie
themes of the life
of any person may become important historically, presently, or await for
its actualization in the future. The powers of the human memory allow
scanning the past life based on the own, individual cognitive and commu¬
nication schemes, as well as the individual features of the one s imagination
458
and language. Thus, the real attitude of the people to their own, personal
history is not in its mechanical reproduction but in a free, creative re¬
construction. The
Memoria
becomes not only the necessary condition of
the human s modus
vivendi
of the present, but also helps liberating one s
creativity and affects one s future life perspective. Addressing
Memoria
we open the holistic entity of the unrealized opportunities of the person s
life. Granted, such opportunities are left in the past, they may never be
repeated or realized at present, as they are/were unique, individual, and
irreproducible as the particular personality proper. But who may pro¬
hibit recalling these
Memoria?
The mechanisms of
Memoria
grant such return to the past, in which
the past does not loose its cognitive value. The experience obtained in such
reconstructions may then be used in the present and in the future, because
in the
Memoria
the properties of the past, the present and then future are
integrated in a very specific way.
Memoria
allows returning to the past and
from that past to browse the opportunities of the present and the future
without distorting them.
The
Memoria
unveils in the social, cultural and the individual historic
aspect of one s life. The social properties of
Memoria
express the memories
of particular persons about those who were connected to them, worked and
lived side by side with them, learned from them and those related
—
rela¬
tives, friends, colleagues and disciples. The power of memory is such that
no society may exist without it.
Memoria
is always
— 1)
a relation between
living and non-living and
— 2)
a collective communicative phenomenon, a
unique act of communication. Within the realm of the rational,
Memoria
is limited to the remembering of the deceased and offerings to them. The
archaic remembrance tradition implies that calling the person s name is
equivalent to the person s presence. And what an abundance of symbolic
explanations and acts is left excluded from the realm of the rational! In the
present work not only did we try to represent the Name of V. A. Schtoff,
naming and publishing it, but rather transfer his Self into the domain
of the communications of living, among those recalling and remembering
him friendly, sympathetically and lovingly. The recollection of the name
V. A. Schtoff , Victor Alexandrovich , Victor in oral or written com¬
munications equals for all of us
—
those who worked to make this book
happen,
—
to his presence among us, to communication with him. And we
tried to achieve the effect of real presence of an absent person.
The
Memoria
is not only and anthropological or, in our case —
philosophico-antropological
constatation.
We tried to draw a memorial cir¬
cle, the
mosaica
of recollections, and thus to reconstruct the philosophico-
antropological portrait of Schtoff s personality, including the effect of his
presence in the modern methodology of science. Indeed, Schtoff belongs
not only to the past, but he is also in the present, exists and participates
459
in the today s life of the professional community and of the closest circle
of relatives and friends. The acknowledgement of such presence for Schtoif
becomes really a presence and his ability to work side by side with the
living. His ideas are alive and still positively affect the creativity in science
and philosophy. The
Memoria
became a uniting factor in the lives of all
who knew Schtoff, who worked and communicated with him.
The first section of the present book is devoted to the reconstruction
of the quilt of Schtoff s life, fragmentary yet integral as it naturally is.
In the second and third sections the
Memoria
is augmented by several
theoretical works dealing with specific problems of modern philosophy of
science and, hence, directly connected with the V.A Schtoff s heritage.
The V.A.Schtoff s professional life can hardly be reconstructed without
alluding to his active participation in various forms of scientific commu¬
nication. Such forms include conferences of different scale, round tables ,
interdisciplinary seminars involving different faculties of the university.
We should note that the topics which Schtoff discussed were not limited
to the problems of the Theory of Cognition, methodology and the logical
structure of Science. Schtoff s public communications required substantial
creative effort and time. However, he was always ready to participate in
discussions of various problems in public life, culture and history. If we
would speculate what could attract Schtoff s attention, should he happen
to visit the today s Faculty of Philosophy, these, in our view, certainly
would be those problems which are discussed in this book.
And last but not least. The very concept of our project is not just re¬
flect Schtoff s personality in a sort of philosophical mirror but also take a
deep look into the world of his life. His life as a philosopher which started
from dealing with the historio-philosophical themes, continued in search
for answers to the questions of the methodology of scientific cognition.
Schtoff was always in search for keeping his philosophical stance updated
and backed up by the knowledge in sciences and humanities which led to
the development of new aspects of the problematics of the methodology
of science. In particular we may refer the reader to Schtoff s theory of
modeling discussing the role of models in the scientific cognition. He was a
staunch rationalist who never lost touch with the reality and kept philoso¬
phy in an uncompromised rigor and self-sufficiency. Such position allowed
him not only to formulate complicated methodological problem but yield
detailed discussion of these problems at his lectures.
Representing our project to the reader I would also like to mention that
each and every participant has his or her own attitude to the past, own
personal attitude to Victor Alexandrovich Schtoff.
When we talk about Schtoff we not only narrate our past. Unique, own
version of communications with Schtoff is a part of personal experiences of
those participating in the project V. A. Schtoff and the modern philosophy
460
of science , representing own recollections and own interpretations, which
altogether form the particular role which Schtoff played in the person s
life.
