SUMMARY
THE GAGAOUZES
(Summary)
The book presents and analyzes the main problems arisen by the
ethnocultural identity of the Gagaouzes. The work is based on published
materials as well as on the empiric field research material gathered by the
author herself in co-operation with a group of turkologists from the Cen¬
tre for Oriental Languages and Cultures, Sofia University. The study is
also grounded on data from other archives: those at Institute of Folklore,
Ethnographic Institute, Musicology Institute, Bulgaria Academy of Sci¬
ences, etc.
The discussion follows the interdisciplinary route, taking into con¬
sideration the achievements of ethnology, folkloristics, linguistics, cul¬
ture studies. The thesis aims at the interpretation of the data (made from
a folkloristic and ethnological viewpoint mainly) and at outlining the
typical features in the ethnocultural characteristic of the Gagaouzes
community.
A novel approach is applied to the Gagaouzes as a community. It
is viewed not just as a sole fact but in its dialogue with other communi¬
ties. The discussion includes the processes on which the communal
identity is being constructed according to particular principles without
the domination of anyone of them. The combination of markers shows
affinity to the cultural images: community language and faith have
turned to be of greatest importance in
gin is construed as a community marker in the description and
autodescription
distinguishing and likening. The stress is put upon the "inside" per¬
spective. The position of the present day "here and now" is the starting
point in the interpretation and deciphering of the community culture.
The problem of community's
tity, which has been studied insufficiently from folkloristic and ethno-
culturological aspect, is also analyzed. Its versatile projections over the
folklore culture
competence, matrimonial and family sphere, etc. is outlined.
In the course of its self-identification and realization the community
makes use of specific mechanisms and phrases that aim the
neutralisation and even compensation of differences in language compe¬
tency in regard to the dominating Bulgarian speaking group. In this con¬
text the concepts of pure, old, real Bulgarians in self-identification are
checked over. For the Gagaouzes themselves, the ethnonym Bulgar/Bul-
garians does not infer obligatory having command of the Bulgarian lan¬
guage.
The self-identifications of the community are "spread" and "im¬
printed" in the difficulties of contemporary everyday life. "The (histori¬
cal) sacrifice"
Christian faith,
the Ottoman rule, is an additional argumentation used by members of the
community to prove their right of equal access to social, economical and
other privileges in the country. Thus, the emblematic old expression
"They have given up their language, but not the faith" has not only his¬
torical but also contemporary meaning in application to the self-identifi¬
cation of the Gagaouzes' community.
One more problem occurs after all opinions are analyzed, namely
the problem revealing not only the everyday life stereotypes about the
community, but the scientifically established stereotypes as well.
