LEGAL
OF THE MACEDONIAN REFUGEES IN BULGARIA
(1918-1947)
SUMMARY
The exposition consists of two parts. In the first part there are mainly the
manifestations of the numerous legal organisations of the Macedonian migrants
in Bulgaria. All refugee formations were registered according to the legal reg¬
ulations of the country; they maintained report documentation and correspon¬
dence with state authorities and civil institutions, with the governments of the
Great Powers, with the League of Nations, with foreign and Bulgarian pubic
figures, politicians, and intellectuals; they issued their own printed publications
and propaganda materials; they established relations with various organisation
structures and similar formations. This huge archive documentation creates the
possibility to track different stages of the life of the refugee formations, such as
establishment, organisation structures and activity, number of members, time of
existence and reasons for dissolution, relations between the united leaderships
with separate brotherhoods/societies, as well as with other similar formations,
which existed outside the country, such as the Union of the Macedonian
Political (Patriotic) organisations in the USA and Canada, and the Union of the
Macedonian Student Associations abroad.
The second part of the book focuses on the conspirational formations of
the Macedonian refugees in Bulgaria, which were of transitional nature
ther legal, nor revolutionary organisations. Most of them had the tendency of
using revolutionary methods, however these were not always realized. A sub¬
stantial part of the conspirational formations were created as auxiliary or as
fully independent organisations, but others remained in an embryonic stage of
development and failed to reach any higher level of organisational complexity.
The founders and main members of these mysterious formations were people,
who assumed various posts in the hierarchy of the Macedonian revolutionary
movement. Mainly, these people were figures of the Macedonian immigration
in the country. There were unknown names among them especially after
19.05.1934,
Due to their conspirational nature and special function, these secret formations
(like the revolutionary organisations) could not be officially registered. An
important characteristics of theirs is that they tried not to use the usual methods
and means for fighting, used by the traditional organisations. In their corre-

spondences
them difficult to discover by their rivals, and for a long time, difficult to analyse
by researches too. The common thing, that united the efforts of the legal and the
secret Macedonian organisations was the common aim of preserving the
Bulgarian national spirit in Macedonia and its liberation, which was the cher¬
ished purpose and dream of the majority of the refugees, revolutionaries and the
local people in Macedonia.
Also discussed in the book are a number of activities of the Internal
Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation (VMRO), as well some domestic and
foreign political events, which are related to the activity of the refugee organi¬
sations. Moreover, attention is paid to the international Communist ideology,
which, through the Bulgarian Communist Party and its followers in the coun¬
try, had a direct influence on the struggle for liberty of the Bulgarians in
Macedonia. In most of the cases the decisions and actions of the Communist
factors, represented by the Comintern, the Balkan Communist Federation and
the Bulgarian Communist Party, created premises for crises among the VMRO
activists and the Macedonian refugee organisations. Regretfully, these crises
often resulted in blood feuds.
The organisational end of the legal Macedonian movement in Bulgaria
was also connected with the Bulgarian Communist Party, whose leaders ruled
the country after
tences they tried to make the "Macedonism" a state ideology. Acting in this
direction, they regulated the work of the immigration formations, by replacing
their organisational purposes and ideals with their opposite. Instead of defend¬
ing the Bulgarian national spirit in Macedonia, the refugee organisations were
forced to praise the "Macedonian" culture, nation and language, as well as to
prepare the population in the
Republic of Macedonia through a steadier transition, called "cultural autono¬
my". After an additional pressure from Belgrade, Skopje and Moscow, the gov¬
ernment of Bulgaria disbanded in

The author has prepared and included in the monograph a lot of graphi¬
cal appendixes. They present in a synthesized way interesting facts about the
number of members, the fluctuations of the ranks, organisational characteris¬
tics, financial status of the different formations as well as their influence in the.
country and abroad. The book includes little known or completely unknown
illustrative materials, which provide the readers with the opportunity to feel the
atmosphere of the struggle for liberty of the Bulgarians in Macedonia.
