This book is dedicated to the

ed book in Modern Bulgarian Language

the „Nedelnik of Sofro-
nij Vračanski,
1806.
However, the history of the Early Printed Sla¬
vonic Books goes back to the end of the XVth and especially to the
XVIth centuries, when only

decennaries after the great
Johann
Gutenberg s invention, the South Slavs become familiar with it.
Those, mostly religious, books take part in the transmission of the
Old Cyrillic literary legacy
-
a symbol of the Orthodox faith during
the Ottoman rale much more then they create a new cultural model.
But this is exactly what makes their genuine value.
Appeared in Venice,
Valachy,
the Balkan local monastic print¬
ing workshops, the Early Printed Cyrillic Books cover a large geo¬
graphical area and satisfy the literary needs and tastes of the
Orthodox ethic societies both laity and clergy. Among their creators
and their rubrics one can find the first Bulgarian printer Yakov
Kraykov from Sofia, as well as the first original printed Bulgarian
work

A subject of particular interest represents the study of some tex¬
tual and linguistic aspects of the interaction between the Balkan
cultural area and Russia under Patriarch Nikon ecclesiastical activ¬
ity regarding the printed books in the XVIIth.century and then. This
is how the Early Printed Book becomes a cross- road of ideas,

which are worth of being illuminated from
every angle.
Our purpose is to provide some comprehensive and, if possible,
interesting readings about (from) its complex problematics. With its

study and a tripartite appendix, the book summarizes
previously unpublished material and commemorates the beginning
of the Cyrillic printing and its precursors in the light of the inter-
