In an era of widespread concern about a decline in political and civic
activity (and party decline), Democracy and Interest Croups assesses the
contribution groups make to the democratic involvement of citizens. It
examines how interest groups are formed, and how they maintain
themselves
dimension of group membership, i.e. how groups generate and stimulate
citizen involvement. The volume reviews the literature and, in addition,
reports on surveys of group organizers (campaigning and non-
campaigning groups); interviews with selected campaign group
organizers; survey data on why members joined groups; and important
novel data on why sympathetic non-members failed
called Free-riding .)
