Unknown Russian Graphics.
Anyone who has just thumbed through this book will agree that the material offered here is
very interesting, and that he has never seen it all before, even if prints are his special interest.
Indeed, very few people can be familiar with the sheet music covers presented here,
especially in such great numbers.
This particular selection includes the most representative covers of the 100-year period,
rather than the most exceptional ones; and yet at the same time I could offer a dozen more
similar collections which would hardly be any worse.
Mass design of sheet music began in

A sheet music cover is somewhere in between a book cover and a poster. Its format is twice as
large as that of a typical book cover and twice as small as that of a poster. There are two
elements in common between book and sheet music covers: the name of the author and
the title. The title page is usually absent in sheet music, making it necessary to place the
information that, in the context of a book, would have made it on to the title page, directly
on the cover of the sheet music
Sheet music design had occasionally been carried out by book designers, painters and poster
artists, including the
Zdanevich
particular area.
Berkovich, Golshtein, Rogachov, Frolov
lion's share of my book. In fact, each and every one of them deserves an entire book all to
himself, preferably a bigger and better one.
It is a great pity that, unlike Moscow "vysotkas" (Stalin's skyscrapers), there were only four
of them. For they tower over the landscape of sheet music covers in much the same way
and in the same way, enhance and adorn it. They were among the few masters of Art
in the Soviet era who dedicated themselves to sheet music design and, over a very short
period

kept tidy on the shelves and dusted, but rather used according to its intended purpose. It
did not take sheet music long to become frayed, and thoughtful owners would simply cut off
the frayed edges or glue them with sticky tape and paper, hardly ever bothering about the
pictures on the covers. Then the sheets were re-bound and, once again, suffered from
merciless trimming. And they were discarded much more frequently than books and
magazines.
Alas, this is what always happens to everything in Russia; sheet music is hardly an exception.
So, having mourned over what we have already lost, let us nevertheless try to preserve what
we still have.
