For over seventy years the ancient town of Myrmekion has been explored by Leningrad and
now St Petersburg archaeologists. The archaeological expedition of the State Hermitage began
work at the site in
1999.
The site is located on the coast of the Kerch bay, near the Quarantine
Cape, and occupies an area of eight hectares
(80, 000
m2). A
Greek colony was founded here at
the turn of the first quarter of the

century
ВС,
which is proved by the discovery of fragments of
early Ionian ceramics imported here. Throughout the

century
ВС
its buildings were dug-outs.
A unique find is a fortified acropolis wall erected in the third quarter of the same century. Ordinary
houses were constructed here in the early 5th century, one of them covered an area of more than
450
m2. The early town was destroyed in a fire in the second quarter of the 5th century to be
restored to life only by the end of the century. There are remains of some rich houses and a temple
of
Demeter
that occupied a large area dating from the first half of the 4th century

A hoard of
electrum staters of Kyzikos from the 5th
-
first half of the 4th centuries
ВС
has been unearthed in
the course of the temple excavations. The town flourished again in the Hellenistic period. It was
protected with a fortified wall with towers that enclosed a complex of town structures. Of particular
interest is a large ash mound formed over the remains of the temple of
Demeter
in the 4th
-
2nd centuries
ВС.
A monumental burial vault in the Myrmekion acropolis comes from the early
Hellenistic epoch. There is another ash mound over it where a hoard of
700
bronze coins from the
3rd century
ВС
has been discovered. The town perished in the turbulent reign of Mithradates VI
Eupator to be revived in the 1st century AD. It developed into a settlement consisting of several
large estates. In the 2nd century AD a sepulchre, probably of the king of Bosporus, was built on the
acropolis rock that held an elegant marble sarcophagus. The population left the town in the late
3rd
-
early 4lh centuries AD, yet life was resumed here in the 8th
-
9th centuries AD and in the
1
3th
-
IS 1 centuries when the Genoese settlement of Pondico was situated here. The archaeological
evidence includes its fortified wall with a moat and necropolis where over
70
graves have been
investigated.
On display are objects from the Kerch cultural and historical preserve and the State Hermitage
collection, mostly discovered in the recent twenty years. They illustrate various aspects of the
town s development in different epochs.
