The text comprises excerpts from Historiarum ab inclinatione Romanorum imperii decades (Decades of history from the deterioration of the Roman Empire) by Flavius Blondus, the Latinized name of Flavio Biondo (1392-1463). Biondo was an early Renaissance Italian historian and archeologist, who wrote several books on the history of Rome. The excerpts were compiled by Johannes Albinus (also called Giovanni Albino), an enthusiast for the literature of antiquity and a statesman, counselor to Ferdinand of Aragon, and historian who died in Rome circa 1496. The lavishly ornate manuscript is especially remarkable for the illuminations on the title pages displaying, in front of an architectural framework, victorious Rome personified as a woman on the verso page, next to a female personification of the defeated enemies of Rome on the right-hand page, sitting amid her broken armor. The manuscript contains gold and ornamental initials as well as edgings consisting of foliage, vases, and pearls. The decorations are ascribed to the Neapolitan painter Giovanni Todeschino (flourished 1482-1503), and their high quality exemplifies the art of the Italian Renaissance. The text comprises excerpts from Historiarum ab inclinatione Romanorum imperii decades (Decades of history from the deterioration of the Roman Empire) by Flavius Blondus, the Latinized name of Flavio Biondo (1392-1463). Biondo was an early Renaissance Italian historian and archeologist, who wrote several books on the history of Rome. The excerpts were compiled by Johannes Albinus (also called Giovanni Albino), an enthusiast for the literature of antiquity and a statesman, counselor to Ferdinand of Aragon, and historian who died in Rome circa 1496. The lavishly ornate manuscript is especially remarkable for the illuminations on the title pages displaying, in front of an architectural framework, victorious Rome personified as a woman on the verso page, next to a female personification of the defeated enemies of Rome on the right-hand page, sitting amid her broken armor. The manuscript contains gold and ornamental initials as well as edgings consisting of foliage, vases, and pearls. The decorations are ascribed to the Neapolitan painter Giovanni Todeschino (flourished 1482-1503), and their high quality exemplifies the art of the Italian Renaissance. Laut Schreibervermerk (Blatt 129 recto) vollendete Giovan Marco Cinico aus Parma, der 1462-1497 für das Königshaus in Neapel tätig war, seine Arbeit an der Handschrift im Jahr 1494. Ursprünglich für König Ferdinand I. von Neapel bestimmt, wurde die Handschrift nach dessen Tod umgewidmet an den Nachfolger, König Alfons II. von Aragon. Die Handschrift enthält Auszüge aus den "Historiarum ab inclinatione Romanorum imperii decades" des Humanisten, Historiographen und Archäologen Flavio Biondo (1392-1463). Er war seit 1433 in der Kanzlei der Kurie tätig und verfasste mehrere Bücher über Römische Geschichte, darunter 1437-1453 die 'Decades', die die europäische Geschichte von der Plünderung Roms 410 bis ins Jahr 1442 erzählen. Die Auszüge aus dem sehr umfangreichen Werk wählte der Humanist Giovanni Albino aus, der bis zu seinem Tod 1497 Rat des Königs von Neapel war. Die doppelseitige Titelminiatur (Blatt 2 verso/3 recto) zählt zu den Spitzenstücken der italienischen Renaissance in Neapel: vor einer architektonisch gestalteten Landschaft sitzt links die Roma in langem roten Kleid auf einem Erdhügel, sie trägt Helm, Schwert, Lanze und eine kleine personifizierte Roma auf der ausgestreckten Hand. Die rot gewandete Frau neben dem zerbrochenen Schild auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite personifiziert die besiegten Feinde Roms. Als Buchschmuck enthalten sind außerdem 18 Goldinitialen, drei ornamentale Initialen und Randleisten in Deckfarben mit Gold.
