To mark the centenary since the death of Robert
Visiani in
1978,
1 have published an article about this fa¬
mous botanist in
Titograd
review
Ovdje .
The article has
been well received by the readers, and upon the request
of the Editorial board of the journal, I have continued to
present other botanists who have conducted research on
Montenegrin flora. In the period
1978-1988, 22
portraits
have been published, from Visiani and
Tommasini, Bi-
asoletto and Ebel, to
Blečić
and K.
Tomić-Stanković.
The political upheavals and changes that started
at the end of the eighties of the 20th century disrupted the
whole social life in Montenegro. This particularly affect¬
ed cultural institutions and ediorial boards of journals, so
I stopped writing these articles on important botanists.
Colleagues and friends, remembering these ar¬
ticles, have been persuading me to compile them in an
Anthology, publish them and save them from the maga¬
zine oblivion . I have accepted, and decided to expand
this book by presenting all the botanists who have made
a significant contribution to the research of Montenegrin
flora, regardless of when they lived and worked.

The history of botanical research in Montenegro
is some
200
years old, and bibliography created in this
period has more than
2500
references. The authors of
these works are numerous
-
they are more than a thou¬
sand. Therefore, it was very hard to make a selection of
the most worthy and to avoid failing to mention impor¬
tant ones. The authors who have been carrying out pio¬
neer botanical research in the 19th century Montenegro
are of great significance, regardless of the extent of work
and the quality of the results. In addition to botanical pa¬
pers, these botanists like Biasoletto, Ebel, Baldacci and
the others, have often written detailed travel chronicles,
through which they presented Montenegro abroad. Be¬
cause of this, it is not possible to use the same criteria for
selecting the botanists from the beginning of the 19th and
the end of the 20th century.
First flora researcher who arrived to
Durmitor,
was German consul in Sarajevo,
Otto Blau. In 1869,
he
crossed
Piva
Monastery and
Piva
mountain, arriving to
Sedlo
and one of the lakes on the southern slopes of
Dur¬
mitor.
He did not climb any of the peaks, and all of his
observations (botanical and others), are summarised in
the short, nine pages long chronicle. But as the pioneer
of the flora research in
Piva
and
Durmitor,
as well as the
author of the chronicle,
Blau
had to be included in the
Anthology. A completely different criteria was used to
include Dmitar
Lakušić,
the youngest of the presented
botanists, who has on the very end of the 20th century
written a Ph.D. thesis on the flora of
Durmitor
(he re¬
searched one genus), which is at the same time the first
plant monograph for this mountain. In the Anthology, a
place was reserved for the well known French geographer
and geologist, Ami
Boue,
the most famous balkanologist

of the 19th century, for two reasons: because I tried to
trace some
floristic
data of Montenegro that are threaded
through his books and botanic literature, and because
some uncertainties regarding
Boué s
visits to Gusinje and
Plav
had to be clarified.
Anthology also includes portraits of two phy-
topathological mycologists: the agronomist Milorad
Mijušković,
and forestry engineer
Dragan
Karadžič.
Through their research on agricultural plants and forest
pathogens, they have given a significant contribution to
the knowledge of mycodiversity of Montenegro, enrich¬
ing it with some
1000
species.
I found it appropriate to present
Krsto Pejović
from
Njeguši,
who was a faithful companion of Antonio
Baldacci and Josef Rohlena on their numerous visits to
Montenegro, but who has also collected plants on
Lovćen
and its surroundings on his own.
I had several dilemmas, and it is possible that I
haven t tackled them in an appropriate manner. Namely,
it would have been beneficial for the book
ifit
present¬
ed the Austrian botanist Franz
Wilhelm
Sieber (1789-
1844).
In
1822,
he published an article
Neue und seltene
Gewäche in Regensburg Flora ,
where he described

new species, among which
Cytìsus ramentaceus
discov¬
ered in
Boka Kotorska.
This is the first floristical data
from Montenegro, which by itself gives Sieber the prin¬
cipal place in the long history of Montenegrin flora re¬
search.
Anthology could have included Franz Maly
(1823-1891),
the inspector of the court gardens Belve¬
dere in Vienna. According to some sources, he visited
Montenegro seven times between
1854.
and
1873.
He
was mostly collecting live plants and seeds for the bo-

tanie
gardens, while his herbaria were studied by other
botanists. His name is associated with two other findings
regarding Montenegrin flora: Pinus leucodermis
Antoine
(from Orijen) and
Aquilegia
grata F. Maly (from
Bijela
Gora).
Two researchers who significantly contributed to
the knowledge of
Boka Kotorska
Bay flora subsequent
to
Tommasini
are also very significant. First is
Emanuel
Weiss
(1837-1870),
who has undertaken botanic investi¬
gations in
1865.
in the vicinity of
Herceg
Novi
and south¬
ern slopes of Orijen. In
1866.
and
1867.
he has published
a list of
220
species, among which one new to the science
-
Bupleurum longepetiolatum Weiss. Besides vascular
plants, he collected large amounts of lichens and mosses,
which were studied by other botanists (G. W.
Körber
and
J. Juratzka). Apart from the years of birth and death (taken
from the index of Flora
Europea ),
I have not managed
to gather additional data regarding Weiss biography.
Second researcher of flora whose presentation in
this Anthology would have been justified, is Carl Stud¬
niczka. He has served as the Austro-Hungarian offi¬
cer in
Dalmaţia
for eight years, during which period he
was conducting
floristic
research in his spare time. His
longest post was in
Oštra
Ponta,
so his investigations
of
Boka Kotorska
flora are quite detailed. He has paid
special attention to the plants and localities that have not
been described in Visiani s Flora
Dalmatica . In
1890,
he published the list of
600
species, most of which are
from
Boka Kotorska
Bay, with only a few from the mid¬
dle
Dalmaţia
(vicinity of Split, Bokovo). Unfortunately,
I have not even managed to find the years of birth and
death for Studniczka, since his name is not in the author
index of Flora
Europea .

Significant contribution to the knowledge of
Montenegrin flora was given by the Polish botanist, Ig-
naz Szyszylowicz, who undertook a long excursion along
the border between Montenegro and Albania in
1886,
in
the
Kučke
and Prokletije Mountains. He has studied the
collection of plants and published it as the co-author with
the famous botanist G. Beck. Since we could not find
Szyszylowicz s data neither in Krakow, where he was
born, nor in Vienna, where he was probably studying, nor
could we find the basic biographical data, his contribu¬
tions were cited within the text on Beck.
Anthology gives the basic biographic data on
botanists, whereas the main attention is given to their re¬
search of Montenegrin flora, their various other observa¬
tions and their links with Montenegro and its institutions,
where they were maintained for longer periods. Since
detailed bibliographies on Montenegrin flora and vegeta¬
tion have already been published
,
we have omitted the
individual bibliographies.
During the literature search, acquisition of the ar¬
chive material, translations of foreign literature to Mon¬
tenegrin language, corrections and editing of the manu¬
script, I have been receiving constant help and support
