Singing companies of Montenegro with a Special Review of cultural
Artistic company Njegos
(Summary)
This study about Montenegrin Culture and Art Societies, with a special review of
KUD
Njegos from Cetinje, represents first comprehensive study of this kind
about those societies, with aim to describe their constitution, development process,
and to tell who were their choir leaders and what was their repertoire like.
In the introduction, word is about the general conditions and preconditions of the
Singing Societies, from the oldest up to the Second World War, and about
KUD
Njegos after that war until the present day. The author is giving a special account
on their formation in the towns all over Montenegro, particularly stressing the
social milieu in which
KUD
Njegos had been created, had been developing and
performing.
Helped with a rich archive and written material from the traveller s notes and
periodical publications, the author of this study gives here detailed description of
the most important components of this societies origin, development and repertoire,
as well as who their choir leaders and the members of the ensemble were, and what
role they played in their local milieu.
It is pointed out how
KUD
Njegos has celebrated
130
anniversary of its
existence, and even though it is not the oldest one of its kind in Montenegro, is the
one that cherish the tradition of Cetinje s Culture and Art Societies, beginning with
1871
when as a part of Cetinje s Library the Singing Society was active. Many
others will follow with a certain discontinuity in their work,
bi
view of the fact of the importance and detailed depiction of Cetinje s Cultural
and Art Societies from the end of 19th and beginning of 20th century, the author
writes particularly about Cetinje s structure and functions in the second half of the
19 1 century, especially giving retrospective look into the cultural-educational
circumstances present at that time in the capital of Montenegro.
There is a separate chapter about the oldest Montenegrin Singing (Culture and Art)
Societies creation in the 19th and 20th century: Singing Society
Jedinstvo
from
Kotor
founded in
1830
which represents the oldest one in Montenegro
Branko
from Podgorica
(1892),
Zahumlje from Niksic
(1898),
Ocinjsko
(1899),
Serbian
Singing Society
«Bratstvo»
from Pljevlja
(1889),
Jedinstvo
from Danilovgrad
(1908)?
Bratimstvo from Bar
(1910),

(1914),
and many others. Here is, a short development review, members and
i thi rk f h ven
(1914),
and many others. Here is, a short p
repertoire, discontinuity in their work, about all of them given.
The author is especially calling readers attention to the

in 19th century, especially to Cetinje s Library as the oldest Culture and Art
Society in Montenegro, Cetinje s and Montenegrin heart and soul and cultural life
organizer.
He emphasizes the fact that the first Singing Society existed in Cetinje in
1871,
and
then he gives an account of Musical Art up to the end of the Independent
Montenegrin State in
1916.
*KUD

Culture And Art Society
Here he gives the main features of Montenegrin Military Music
-
the First
one
(1871-187910
with its choir leader Anton
Schultz
and its initiation and
activities, and the Second one
(1889-1915)
and its choir leader
Frantesele Vilmer
(Czechoslovakian as well), composer and publisher, and to whom Montenegrin
Musical Culture owes a great deal. The author tells interesting stories about both of
this Music s creation, their ensemble structure and their repertoire, and gives some
particularities not known in historiography up to the present.
In the further narration, the author gives an account of more perfect (creative)
forms of Musical Art
-
composers, amateur and professional ones. In the first rang
there are

egos, the Montenegrin
sovereign Nikola the First sons, and their composers opus, with the following
report on the professional musicians Robert Tolinger (Czechoslovakian)
(1859-
1911),
and
Jovan
Ivanisevic
(1861-1889),
Aleksa Ivanovic
and
Jovan
Milosevic all
from Cetinje.
Here is given a particular emphasis on Cetinje s High School Institutes (The Girl s
Institute The Empress Maria Aleksandrovna ), Theological-Teacher School and
High School
(Gimnazija)
and their participation in the cultural-educational life in
the Montenegrin capital. Then the detailed elaboration about particular Cultural
and Art Societies of Cetinje from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th
century follows about Culture and Art Society
Gorski Vijenac
(1894-1904),
Artisan-Singing
and Tambourine Society
(1904-1914).
The study about these societies has been
more or less known before their presentation here.
The author has reconstructed with a success the picture of the First Church Singing
Society
(1907-1915)
and its successful performing on tours between the two World
Wars, its home and international recognition and awards received
(1931
Dr
Miloje
Milojevic, Prof. Radosav Medenica). This Society performing on tours in
Montenegro and Yugoslavia
(Beograd,
Novi Sad, Subotica,
Sarajevo,
Mostar),
as
well as abroad, were numerous.
In the period after The Second World War there were a few Culture and Art
Societies in Cetinje, the most famous of which was a trade union district
KUD
Jovan Tomasevic
(1945-1948)
with its artistic directors:
Jovan
Milosevic,
Marko
Rivijer, Miljan Cejovic,. This society took participation in every important after
war folklore festival in
SFR
Yugoslavia. The leading director of the folklore
section was
Anastasia
Tasia
Jovanovic
(1912-1998).

In
1951
the State National Ensemble
Oro
was founded. At its very beginning it
counted
32
members, and grew to have
45
members in
1954.
Its director was
Aleksandar
Асо
Prijic
(1920-1986),
famous painter and academician. At the end
of April
1952
this society created Popular and Tambourine Orchestra. This
Orchestra performed in all of the most important Montenegrin towns. Its artistic
directors and choreographers were
Anastasia
Tasia
Jovanovic and
Vera Didic,
and
at times
Agata Zic
from
Beograd
and
Trajee
Ivanovski from Macedonia had been
hired. The ensemble performed on tours in many towns in Serbia,
Vojvodina
and
Slovenia, in West Germany, France, Switzerland and many other countries. France
being the country it had performed the most. In
1954
in
Bretagne
gave
15
concerts.
It happened at that time that some of the ensemble members have committed
violations. Owing to those incidents the Montenegrin Government hastily
abolished the National Ensemble
Oro
on its return to the country in December
1954
and dismissed all its membEver since Montenegro hasn t got a National
Ensemble....
The author includes in this study the activity of the Brass Instrument Orchestra
-
the Town Bleh Music active in the period of
1954-1980.
Its directors were
Franjo
Vazulni (Czechoslovakian) and
Simo
Komadina
(Montenegrin). It counted
20-30
members.
The special attention, in this study, is paid to
KUD Njegos
for the period of time
from
1952
to
2001,
to its performing tours in the country and abroad, and its
domestic and international recognitions.
KUD
Njegos was, at the beginning of
1952,
integrated from a few local Culture and Art Societies. As the result of the
National Ensemble
Oro
abolition
KUD
Njegos had been fortified by
Oro
members who had joined it.
KUD
Njegos had inherited Oro s rich costumes as
well.
KUD
Njegos have for the period time of
5
decades of its existence and activities
had some discontinuity in its work but would always have rebuild itself to the
former glory. Its activities have been recognized and awarded with a string of
domestic and international recognition: (Dusan Skovran, The Order of People
Merits with a silver rays-1977, Silver and Bronze Necklace at the prestigious
international festival in Dijon-1966, the Award of Cetinje Liberation
2000).
In
1974
it counted
30
dancers. It performed on tours in home country and abroad.
Its most famous tours were in
Gascogne,
Paris, Dijon, Marseille,
Spoletto.
At the
invitation of
Matica Crnogorska
from North Americas, it had performed for
Montenegrin Diaspora in Canada (Toronto, Montreal), in USA (New York,
Chicago, Detroit) and in Mexico. It also had performed very successfully on tours
in Czechoslovakia, Poland, Switzerland,
Mallorca,
Cyprus, Russia (Kostroma) and
Germany
(Nürnberg,
Lorach).
KUD
Njegos has celebrated a few anniversaries:

and its director s
(Bozidar

are given.
The study is richly illustrated with more than
120
pictures that are corresponding
with the main text and visually compliment it greatly.
In the conclusion, the need of Montenegro having its own Folklore Ensemble as it
is the case with the rest of the ex Yugoslavian republics is emphasized.
The author is of the opinion that the biggest rights on that has
KUD Njegos
taking into consideration its reputation, spatial and human resources, and he pleads
that this ensemble becomes professional and declared as National. Undoubtedly,
this ensemble fully deserves it, and it can in the best manner represent rich
Montenegrin Ethno-Culture manifested in its original music, stage and artistic
dance expressions.

Singing companies of Montenegro with a Special Review of cultural
Artistic company "Njegos"
(Summary)
This study about Montenegrin Culture and Art Societies, with a special review of
KUD
"Njegos" from Cetinje, represents first comprehensive study of this kind
about those societies, with aim to describe their constitution, development process,
and to tell who were their choir leaders and what was their repertoire like.
In the introduction, word is about the general conditions and preconditions of the
Singing Societies, from the oldest up to the Second World War, and about
KUD
"Njegos" after that war until the present day. The author is giving a special account
on their formation in the towns all over Montenegro, particularly stressing the
social milieu in which
KUD
"Njegos" had been created, had been developing and
performing.
Helped with a rich archive and written material from the traveller's notes and
periodical publications, the author of this study gives here detailed description of
the most important components of this societies origin, development and repertoire,
as well as who their choir leaders and the members of the ensemble were, and what
role they played in their local milieu.
It is pointed out how
KUD
"Njegos" has celebrated
130
anniversary of its
existence, and even though it is not the oldest one of its kind in Montenegro, is the
one that cherish the tradition of Cetinje's Culture and Art Societies, beginning with
1871
when as a part of Cetinje's Library the Singing Society was active. Many
others will follow with a certain discontinuity in their work,
bi
view of the fact of the importance and detailed depiction of Cetinje's Cultural
and Art Societies from the end of 19th and beginning of 20th century, the author
writes particularly about Cetinje's structure and functions in the second half of the
19'1 century, especially giving retrospective look into the cultural-educational
circumstances present at that time in the capital of Montenegro.
There is a separate chapter about the oldest Montenegrin Singing (Culture and Art)
Societies creation in the 19th and 20th century: Singing Society

1830
which represents the oldest one in Montenegro

and many others. Here is, a short development review, members and

The author is especially calling readers attention to the

in 19th century, especially to Cetinje's Library as the oldest Culture and Art
Society in Montenegro, Cetinje's and Montenegrin heart and soul and cultural life
organizer.
He emphasizes the fact that the first Singing Society existed in Cetinje in
1871,
and
then he gives an account of Musical Art up to the end of the Independent
Montenegrin State in
1916.

Here he gives the main features of Montenegrin Military Music
-
the First

(1871-187910
with its choir leader Anton
Schultz
and its initiation and
activities, and the Second one
(1889-1915)
and its choir leader
Frantesele Vilmer
(Czechoslovakian as well), composer and publisher, and to whom Montenegrin
Musical Culture owes a great deal. The author tells interesting stories about both of
this Music's creation, their ensemble structure and their repertoire, and gives some
particularities not known in historiography up to the present.
In the further narration, the author gives an account of more perfect (creative)
forms of Musical Art

egos, the Montenegrin
sovereign Nikola the First sons, and their composers opus, with the following
report on the professional musicians Robert Tolinger (Czechoslovakian)
(1859-
1911),
and
Jovan
Ivanisevic
(1861-1889),
Aleksa Ivanovic
and
Jovan
Milosevic all
from Cetinje.
Here is given a particular emphasis on Cetinje's High School Institutes (The Girl's
Institute "The Empress Maria Aleksandrovna"), Theological-Teacher School and
High School
(Gimnazija)
and their participation in the cultural-educational life in
the Montenegrin capital. Then the detailed elaboration about particular Cultural
and Art Societies of Cetinje from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th
century follows about Culture and Art Society
"Gorski Vijenac"
(1894-1904),
Artisan-Singing
and Tambourine Society
(1904-1914).
The study about these societies has been
more or less known before their presentation here.
The author has reconstructed with a success the picture of the First Church Singing
Society
(1907-1915)
and its successful performing on tours between the two World
Wars, its home and international recognition and awards received
(1931
Dr
Miloje
Milojevic, Prof. Radosav Medenica). This Society performing on tours in
Montenegro and Yugoslavia
(Beograd,
Novi Sad, Subotica,
Sarajevo,

as
well as abroad, were numerous.
In the period after The Second World War there were a few Culture and Art
Societies in Cetinje, the most famous of which was a trade union district

In
1951
the State National Ensemble
"Oro"
was founded. At its very beginning it
counted
32
members, and grew to have
45
members in
1954.
Its director was
Aleksandar
Асо
Prijic
(1920-1986),
famous painter and academician. At the end
of April
1952
this society created Popular and Tambourine Orchestra. This
Orchestra performed in all of the most important Montenegrin towns. Its artistic
directors and choreographers were
Anastasia
Tasia
Jovanovic and
Vera Didic,
and
at times
Agata Zic
from
Beograd
and
Trajee
Ivanovski from Macedonia had been
hired. The ensemble performed on tours in many towns in Serbia,
Vojvodina
and
Slovenia, in West Germany, France, Switzerland and many other countries. France
being the country it had performed the most. In
1954
in
Bretagne
gave
15
concerts.
It happened at that time that some of the ensemble members have committed
violations. Owing to those incidents the Montenegrin Government hastily
abolished the National Ensemble
"Oro"
on its return to the country in December
1954
and dismissed all its membEver since Montenegro hasn't got a National
Ensemble.
The author includes in this study the activity of the Brass Instrument Orchestra
-
the Town "Bleh" Music active in the period of
1954-1980.
Its directors were
Franjo
Vazulni (Czechoslovakian) and
Simo
Komadina
(Montenegrin). It counted
20-30
members.
The special attention, in this study, is paid to
KUD "Njegos"
for the period of time
from
1952
to
2001,
to its performing tours in the country and abroad, and its
domestic and international recognitions.
KUD
"Njegos" was, at the beginning of
1952,
integrated from a few local Culture and Art Societies. As the result of the
National Ensemble
"Oro"
abolition
KUD
"Njegos" had been fortified by
"Oro"
members who had joined it.
KUD
"Njegos" had inherited "Oro's" rich costumes as
well.
KUD
"Njegos" have for the period time of
5
decades of its existence and activities
had some discontinuity in its work but would always have rebuild itself to the
former glory. Its activities have been recognized and awarded with a string of
domestic and international recognition: (Dusan Skovran, The Order of People
Merits with a silver rays-1977, Silver and Bronze Necklace at the prestigious
international festival in Dijon-1966, the Award of Cetinje Liberation
2000).
In
1974
it counted
30
dancers. It performed on tours in home country and abroad.
Its most famous tours were in
Gascogne,
Paris, Dijon, Marseille,
Spoletto.
At the
invitation of
Matica Crnogorska
from North Americas, it had performed for
Montenegrin Diaspora in Canada (Toronto, Montreal), in USA (New York,
Chicago, Detroit) and in Mexico. It also had performed very successfully on tours
in Czechoslovakia, Poland, Switzerland,
Mallorca,
Cyprus, Russia (Kostroma) and
Germany
(Nürnberg,
Lorach).
KUD
"Njegos" has celebrated a few anniversaries:

and its director's
(Bozidar

are given.
The study is richly illustrated with more than
120
pictures that are corresponding
with the main text and visually compliment it greatly.
In the conclusion, the need of Montenegro having its own Folklore Ensemble as it
is the case with the rest of the ex Yugoslavian republics is emphasized.
The author is of the opinion that the biggest rights on that has
KUD "Njegos"
taking into consideration its reputation, spatial and human resources, and he pleads
that this ensemble becomes professional and declared as National. Undoubtedly,
this ensemble fully deserves it, and it can in the best manner represent rich
Montenegrin Ethno-Culture manifested in its original music, stage and artistic
dance expressions.
