SUSAN HAYWARD
Luc Besson is the only French director to have crossed over successfully
during the
Hollywood cinema and yet this is only the second book in English on this
major international director. The Films of Luc Besson: master of spectacle
brings together a selection of essays from an international team of
scholars to explore Besson s work from a variety of critical perspectives.
The collection opens with the first translation of the
article which called for the films of Besson and his fellow directors of the
cinéma
seriously. There are chapters looking at Besson s work as a producer
of other people s films, and at his own films using genre, gender and
costume studies. The Serra-Besson collaboration has been little explored
by scholars; this collection has two chapters on
Besson s films. The volume concludes with a previously unpublished
interview given at the time of the release of his
There is an extensive filmography and bibliography.
The book will be of interest to Besson enthusiasts, as well as to students
and researchers working in Film and Media Studies, French Studies, and
to those with more specific interests in film scores and costume studies.

Phil Powrie is Professor of French Cultural Studies at Newcastle University
