Abstract
This is the first comprehensive study the mythological figure of Marsyas in Roman
culture from ca.
of two traditions of Marsyas which have hitherto only been studied separately: A
Graeco-Phrygian tradition which culminates in a musical competition with Apollo
and with Marsyas subsequent punishment, and an Italic tradition in which Marsyas
is the founder of the
discuss the iconography of the earliest known representation of Marsyas in Rome, a
statue which stood in the Forum
known as an indicium libertatis (symbol of liberty). On the basis of its iconography,
I associate the statue with the Italic tradition. In Chapter Two, I discuss the statue in
relation to other
dedication of this statue to the third century plebeian leader, Gaius
the first plebeian enrolled in both the augural and pontifical colleges. The third
chapter concerns images of the statue on coins and gems associated with the Marians
during the Sullan civil war and the use of such objects for disseminating propaganda
in the late Republic. In this chapter, I also examine the contexts in which these
images may have had meaning (i.e., debates concerning the integration of Italians
into Rome s political system, the role of augury in Roman politics, and the limits of
plebeian

in the late Republic as a response to the Marian politicization of the Forum Marsyas.
I argue that changes in the iconography and conception of Marsyas in this period are
due to changes in Roman society; the result was that Marsyas was no longer
conceived as an indicium libertatis but as an indicium concordiae. This is most
clearly seen in the works of Ovid, who uses the existence of the two traditions of
Marsyas to explore the limits
