Development of modern gymnastics and physical education in gen¬
eral is closely connected with national movements in the
needs of military circles for healthy and capable freshmen (young soldiers).
As early as
due to war necessities and trainings were organized and carried out by of- ^
ficers of national guards. The first organized system of gymnastic exercises
completely in the aim of achieving national goals was created by a German
Frederic
nament. For Frederic Jan gymnastics was means of upbringing which was
diminishing religious, class and social differences thus creating precondi- u
tions for national unity.
As a reaction to Germanization, in
tics system
Falcon movement was directly relying on turner system of exercises, and the
most significant influence on the movement development had
(1832-1885)
aim to prepare the nation for an action of national-political character with
ideas of liberalism and

nations, especially in South-Slavonic and Serbian traditions.
The idea of the Falcon was spreading quickly. In
was founded in Ljubljana, but it was dismissed by the Austrian authorities

organized with the same idea for liberating and uniting of all Croats in
At that time falcon movement in Croatia was not directly national, but it was
connected with Slovenian and Serbian Falcon movements, until
the 'Union of Croatian Falcon Association" was established in Susak.
Serbs were exercising together with Croats in 'Croatian Falcon' until
foundation of 'Serbian Falcon' in Zagreb on 14th May,
Falcon movement as a separate organization was established in Sremski

year at Monastery Ravanica in Srem.
The basic inspiration for development of the falcon movements in
Slavonic regions in Austro-Hungarian Empire was a struggle for national
emancipation and resistance to national alienation. Serbia, as a free and an
independent country, was developing over official state institutions a na¬
tional idea with its citizens, so it did not have the need to organize special
associations which would carry out state duties. Only with the increase
of the danger of war clashes before the First World War were the
ju
circles which were developing national all-inclusive Slavonic idea.
