Summary
The purpose of the book is to examine of the rise of
the civil society in Poland during the decade of
is the time of what the author calls the "longest Polish na¬
tional insurcection". According to her, the peaceful tran¬
sition to democracy started in Poland in August
the emergence of the "Solidarity" movement. The imposi¬
tion of the martial law did not clog the process transition
that continued within latent structures of society through¬
out
whole socio-political regime.
In analyzing the process, the author emphasizes the
significance of democratic values and norms in the Polish
collective consciousness that had been deeply rooted in
Polish history and national tradition for the subsequent
developments. The rise of Solidarity only activated them.
The norm of "non-violence" that became the principle of
political action by the Polish society of the second half
of the twentieth century has been a manifestation of this
canon.
It was the maturity of the civil society that made pos¬
sible socially accepted agreements between the political
representation of the opposition and the communist
authorities concerning a negotiated liberal democratic
transformation of the country's political and economic
order.

Summary
The specific manifestations of the existence of the civil
society at the dawn of the communist rule in Poland are
discussed against the background of different theoretical
traditions. In the author's view, a civil society can exist
and function even under unfavorable conditions of a non-
democratic regime, as was the late communism. She also
relates the topic of a peaceful social change initiated by
the civil society in relation to theoretical studies of politi¬
cal revolutions. The main analytical instrument she uses
in this context is that of "ideological conversion".
The author questions the view that Poland has not had
a tradition of the civil society. The existence of sometimes
latent and sometimes manifest opposition to communist
proves that even under most inopportune circumstances
the norms and values constitutive of the civil society could
persist. In developing her argument she uses a combina¬
tion of methodological instruments that belong to the field
of history as well as sociology. This derives from the in¬
terdisciplinary character of the book: it both reconstructs
historical facts on the grounds of the existing historical
materials and tries to identify and explain in terms of con¬
version changes in ideas and human attitudes.
