THE MERE MENTION OF THE NORTH usually conjures images of
windswept hills and chimneys, cloth caps and whippets, cobbled streets and
brass bands, L. S. Lowry and Coronation Street. Such notions have been formed
over the course of hundreds of years and are firmly established.
In this fascinating and wide-ranging book, Dave Russell uses discussion of tourist
literature and literary fiction, dialect, the stage, film and radio and television
broadcasting, music and sport to explore and explain these widely held
perceptions of the North. Therefore, it shows how northerners see themselves,
are seen by southerners, and how northerners think they are seen by
southerners.
The aim of the book, therefore, is to assess the portrayal of the North within
the national culture and show how, by the cultural activity of its inhabitants, the
region has made important
English culture as a whole. Thus, we can see how these cultural contributions
have impacted upon attitudes to the region and its place within wider notions of
Englishness .
Rooted in extensive research, this book is accessible, engaging and enjoyable to
read and will be of interest to those interested in the representation, position
and future role of the North of England.
