Kirchenburgen sind das Markenzeichen
Siebenbürgens - nirgends findet sich eine
derartige Dichte und Vielfalt von Kirchen¬
burgen wie in dieser alten Kulturlandschaft.
Vom 13. bis zum 16. Jahrhundert gegen die
Einfalle von Tartaren, Türken und anderen
Angreifern errichtet, besaß früher nahezu
jedes siebenbürgisch-sächsische Dorf eine
Wehrkirche, in der die Bevölkerung mitsamt
Vieh und Vorräten Schutz fand. Heute sind
noch etwa 140 von ihnen erhalten. Die Trutzig-
keit ihrer Erscheinung steht in malerischem
Gegensatz zur lieblichen Hügellandschaft
Siebenbürgens. In der Dorfmitte oder auf
einer nahen Anhöhe gelegen geben sie den
Dörfern ihren typischen Charakter. Durch
die Auswanderung der Siebenbürger Sachsen,
insbesondere in den Jahren nach 1990, haben
die Kirchenburgen den Großteil ihrer Ge¬
meinden verloren und sind nunmehr vom
Verfall bedroht. Gleichzeitig ist ein wachsen¬
des Interesse des Fremdenverkehrs festzu¬
stellen und sechs der Wehrkirchen sind bereits
in das UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe aufgenommen.

character. Due to the mass emigration of Transylva-
nian Saxons, in particular after

these fortified
churches have lost most of their communities and
are now falling into disrepair. At the same time,
tourism is growing and six of the defence churches
now belong to the UNESCO-World Heritage Site. |
