of secular town clergy in Moldova, 15th to 17th
century. Succession and cohesion in the founda¬
tion of monasteries by princes:
The author focuses on the secular clergy of towns located east of the Carpa¬
thians; in addition to their general social status, these clerics derived their
sense of community from the prestige assigned to sacerdotal standing. As con¬
cerns clerics who were members of the elite, this cohesion was also a product
of being contiguous with political authority. Priests in service of voyvodes
were the most intimate attendants of Moldavian sovereigns, owing to their
role of intercessors and confessors to princes. A description of this privileged
relationship is given by documents issued by the voyvode chancellery, which
refer to them as pleaders . Not all servants of the church at religious esta¬
blishments founded by rulers bore this designation, but only those with expe¬
rience and prestige in the ranks of the Church and of the community. This
specific part of the clergy did not, however, make up an ecclesiastic category
in an administrative sense, but rather an elite specializing in princely piety.
Besides the symbolic prestige they enjoyed, the status of these servants of the
church may be determined by analyzing other elements, such as land-owning,
member status in the administrative bodies of towns, and knowledge of the
written word. If, going by these coordinates, it may be said that priests in the
service of rulers owed their social status solely to this relationship, there are
many instances where their families stand as examples of rising to power by
amassing material wealth and acquiring literacy.

and related bodies. Their purpose was not that of their name being recorded
among masses, but of granting the latter access to the hereafter. There is,
however, a group of sources that mention the pauper issue: wills. These legal
statements are records of the wish of certain individuals to dispose their
possessions to another person or institution. In wills predating the religious
Reform, a perhaps ever-occurring element is the disposition of goods or mo¬
ney, for both religious bodies and the poor. In wills, a distinction is being
made between provisions of the will concerning the paupers in poorhouses and
those regarding goods that were to be given, or simply distributed to the poor.
This split in perception over the pauper issues leads to the conclusion that
only some of the paupers were institutionalized, while others depended on
charity, often begging for a living. At the beginning of the nth century, the ad¬

the debates of the Romanian historiography about the origins of the Walla-

Wallachian voyvods. Also the spiritual factor is addressed, since during the
period discussed, religion proved to be the major element in holding the com¬

16th to 18th century. Several considerations
This study approaches the issue of the interdependence of roads and towns
in Moldova. After a brief digression in historiography, the author focuses on
geography as a relevant factor in outlining communication routes; in Moldova,
roads reflected the flow direction of the main rivers crossing the country, hea¬
ding towards the Danube and the Black Sea. Land patterns in the montane
and submontane area stretching up to the Siret river valley dictated a symme¬
try of the routes that closely parallels that of the local rivers. However, east of

road network becomes an intricate mesh, even if main route directions remain

These considerations suggest that, at the middle of the 16th century, the basic
urban network in Moldova was fully established, and routes connecting these
centers underwent no significant change. The fact that the number of towns
remains constant over a long period of time was undoubtedly due to past poli¬
tical and economical conditions in Moldova.

on the one hand, the process of reorganization supervised by Grigore

DOCUMENTS
Petronel Zahariuc, Nine 16th century documents
on the history of Bucharest
An outline of the history of Bucharest, relying on archeological findings,
must not overlook the major significance of documents issued by the local ad¬
ministration, namely by chief magistrates and town counselors, which include
various house sales and sales of vineyards located on the hills of the town. The
small number of these documents is complemented by the author with nine
documents passed by the magistrates and the counselors of Bucharest, as pre¬
served in the Archives of two monasteries on Mount
nic document from the Archive of the Xiropotam monastery and eight Slavonic
documents (out of which, seven original and one translation) from the archive
of the
reliable picture of the list of chief magistrates in Bucharest over the second
half of the 16th century.
