SUMMARY
In the Middle Ages the Russians came to the Northern Murman from the White Sea
area where there already existed some trade producers settlements (the
mouth, Karelian coast). But the Tersky coast was developed much earlier by the people
in the process of the Novgorod colonization. The first information about the Russians
coming to the Cola Peninsula relates definitely to the end-15th century if we don t take
into consideration irregular but frequent military expeditions carried out by Zavolochje
(Dvina
were described in the Norwegian Chronicles and the
sources informing that several monasteries were founded in this area in the first third of
the 16th century. Occupation of the Northern Murman happened due to creating coastal
season stations which developed into the permanent settlements and trading centers
(Pechenega, Kegor, Cola).
Monasteries colonized the area at the same time but trading had the priority because
it had been an economic basis for the colonization. The idea can be proved by the fact
that Reverend Trifon used to deal with producing and trading before he founded the
Pechenega Monastery.
The Britons who appeared in the Russian North for the first time in the mid-16th
century could see in the Murman area a huge international trading center
Rybachy peninsula) where the Russians were leading in the trade with participation of
the
local people subjected to double or even triple tribute payment evidences that there were
specific relations between Tsar s nationals and our Scandinavian neighbours. Speaking
present day language, an exclusive economic zone appeared there spontaneously, and
all parties had equal rights for taxation the Laplanders. This period ran up to
when clerks made registration of all Murman coast people who paid tributes in order to
regulate tributes payment into the Tsar s treasury.
Approximately at the same time in the Cola there was found an administrative
center to govern the area, and the international trading shifted there from Kegor and
Pechenega. The Pechenega Monastery was also shifted to Cola after the Swedish
aggression in
patrimonial owner. Most probably owing to the Cola developing and the voevode
authority established there and supported always by the Tsar s court all the Danish

attempts to conquer the Russian Laplandia failed. More over we don t know any serious
written sources confirming such Danish ambitions.
At the beginning of the 17th century after the time of distemper the Russian state
managed to hold this polar area defending it in the fight with neighbours. However the
closeness of hostile countries and lack of reliable communication with Murman drove

its quite unique non-freezing bay. Due to this reason Cola peninsula trade was rather
limited and its shot rise in the 16th century happened in time of a number of west-
European expeditions attempting to find the North-Eastern passage. Foreign merchants
fixed a regular seaway not to China and India, but to Russian northern harbours and
initiated developing of the vast Russian market.
It is to be mentioned in conclusion that the written and map materials discussed
in the book should be further confirmed by archaeological researches of the less
studied Murman heritages of the Middle Age such as monasteries, season stations and
Laplanders settlements. This will help to throw light upon many problems connected
with the history of the Cola Peninsula.
