Henryk

espionage, but the true reason of repressions against him was the fact that he had
talked with the Warsaw correspondent of
of Nikita Khrushchev at the 22nd CPSU Congress. The Soviet leader had revealed
the circumstances of Stalin s death and ousting Beria from power in
Disclosing secrets of international Communist movement from Warsaw to the
West angered Khrushchev, who reproached
Secretary of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers Party ordered the
security police to find out the perpetrator of the leak. Thus with the outbreak of an
international scandal a trivial indiscretion of Holland became an affair .
Holland s arrest made by the security police caused a ferment in the milieu of
the party intellectuals who were disappointed with
the first case of repressions against a Communist Party member since
circumstances of Holland s death, which had never been explained in public, sug¬
gested a political murder.
The journalist s funeral became a demonstration of protest against revival of
omnipotence of the Security Service and Gomulka s limitation of civil rights gained
by the society in the Polish October
litical elite. People present at the funeral service were persecuted: they had to justify
themselves at the special committee of the Political Bureau.

The author also draws attention to the police context of Holland s affair. This
was the surveillance of the Western journalists and diplomats by Polish counterin-
telligence. The Communist authorities thought it was undesirable that foreign jour¬
nalists gathered information via unofficial contacts with Polish intellectuals and
tried to oppose it. The security apparatus was a Party tool to prevent secret political
knowledge from leaking abroad. This excuse was also applied to use the abilities of
the secret police activities in the fights of competing fractions in the power elite.
The tragic Holland s affair was an important and well remembered historical
fact. From the time perspective it is seen as one of the last accords of the fight of the
reformative wing of Party activists for preserving the policy developed in the Octo¬
ber
which ended with the campaign against the intellectuals in
