CATHOLICISM AND CLERICALISM
In the first part of the article I present a polemic between J.
Aleš Ušeničnik
opposite approaches towards the attitudes about: understanding the concept
of the separation of the Church from the state, the church strategy towards
the broader society, the question of
demarcation from the politics and the assessment of the critics from the
political opponents of the Church. This publics polemic between two the
most distinguished representatives was suspended as soon as it began and
the content of it is still indistinct inside RKC. We could recognise in which
direction will the Rimocatolics church direct their strategy in the future
(Ušeničnik s
towards the same questions as before.
In the second part of the article I present the analysis of the column from
the religious journal
the results we can conclude, that the majority of the columns are about the
religious-political topics, more that the third of them have very clear
clericalistics connotation. If the columns reflect church official strategy than
the response from the public will be as it is reflected in the Slovenian Public
Opinion Survey.

RELIGIOSITY AND POLITICS
By way of survey, we had studied the impact of religiosity upon political
attitudes and actions in central European transition countries: Slovenia,
Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, (former Eastern) Germany,
and Croatia. The data were collected in
226
The basic picture is one of secularization, i.e. depicting a weak impact of
religiosity upon political, a renouncing of the existence of such an impact
upon a personal level, as well as the renouncing of the desirability of such a
link. On the other hand, the link between religiosity and political party
preferences, studied only in Slovenia (because of the non-comparability of
individual parties), testifies as to the existence of such a link: religious
subjects showed
of Slovenia and towards the Slovenian People s Party, two declared Catholic
oriented parties. Thus, the basic flndining is one of attitude inconsistency.
Religious Catholics do not wish to be infleunced in their political choices
and actions by their religious affiliation, but in fact they remain so. This
could be interpreted as the first stage of an attitdinal change (departure
from the political hegemony of the Church), towards
decision making, but it could also be interpreted as an attitudinal
inconsistency which will be surpassed in the opposote direction, by
disregarding present normative attitudes of principle. Nevbertheless, the
first possibility seems more propbable, as the attitudes denying the impact of
religious attitudes upon politics are to varied.
There are some individual differences between countries, mainly former
Eastern Germany fitting less into the group, raising questions of its
comparability.

CATHOLIC CHURCH AND CHRISTIAN IN THE
PERCEPTION OF A MODERN SLOVENIAN
Analysis of empirical data from the
marginalization (but not so much oppression) of religious people and Church
in the period of communist rule, in the consciousness of modern Slovenians.
With respect to the present period, most people believe that Church main
function is to provide of relief to people in distress and help people searching
for the truth. In addition to this, public sees Church as relatively affluent. There
are two opposing images of Church in contemporary Slovenian society, a
positive and a negative one. Analysis revealed higher level of confessionality
than religiosity, but at the same time, also gradual decrease of both
confessionality and intensity of relationship with Church. In general, more
people are satisfied than dissatisfied with the Church. Most people disapprove
of Church involvement in public and political issues. What most people expect

from Church, is finding answers to the question of the meaning of life,
questions of morality and family. However, in Slovenian consciousness the
prevalent image of a Christian is still connected to the Church. Association
with the Church is especially strong at major turning points in life, where
people expect Church to be by their side. Compared to political expectations
from the Church, religious expectations are in general much higher.

classes while non-religiosity and non-dogmatic religiosity with higher social
classes. RCC was an identification symbol of lower social classes. In the late

POLAND AND SLOVENIA
RELIGIOUS DISSIMILARITIES
The paper presents religious differences between Poland and Slovenia in
the
terms of religion, characterised primarily by Catholicism, no two countries
are more dissimilar than Poland and Slovenia. Poland and Slovenia conform
to the so-called Latin religious-cultural model. The model involves Church
and Anti-Church polarisation society and the potential for confrontation.
The thesis authors wish to pursue is that during the
variants of the Latin model are applicable in Poland and Slovenia. Namely,
Poland lies somewhere between the traditional inhibited Latin religious-
cultural model and restored or reactivated classic Latin religious-cultural
228
model, while Slovenia lies somewhere between the restored, reactivated
classic religious-cultural model and a post-Latin religious-cultural model.
The reasons behind dissimilarity rest on a number of historical and
structural factors.

national data sets (Poland, Croatia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Hungary, Czech

death (deep religiosity). The second step is an analysis of fifteen variables
measuring the three dimensions of religiosity. They serve as basis for
constructing a complex dimension consisting of three elements (non-religious,
autonomously religious, church religious). This complex dimension was

other dimensions of religiosity and selectedsocio-demographic variable. Based
on this classification a rank of seven countries is derived, according to the

The paper presents analysis of religiosity in Slovenia, based on Slovenian
Public Opinion Survey
Values Survey
The author maintains that the influence of political situation on religiosity in
Slovenia was strong only in a short period immediately after the
war. In the sixties and seventies a secularization trend may be observed in
Slovenia. This trend ceases in the eighties, when new forms of religiosity
emerge, in the context of individualization and pluralization of values. The
process of political and economic transition had no strong influence on
religious attitudes. Political legalization of Catholic Church, which as a
result, enhanced its political and economic influence, did not increase its social
prestige. On the contrary, the process seems to have stimulated a new weave of
secularization in Slovenia, similar to situation in Western Europe.
