MIHAJLO PUPIN
AND RELATED
ARCHIVAL DOCUMENTS
Summary
In the Manuscript department of
Matica Srpska,
the oldest cultural scientific and
literary association among the Serbs (founded in
1826)
there are
26
original letters of the
great American scientist of Serbian origin
Mihajlo I dvorski Pupin.
Apart from the letters,
there are as well several archival documents also connected with him and his work there.
All those documents were processed in accordance with the standard archival principles
and are available to scholars.
In the same department of
Matica Srpska
but in the part not yet organized for the
public use a roll of documents closely related to
Mihajlo
Pupin was found thanks to the
research initiated on the occasion of ISO 1 Anniversary of
Mihajlo Pupin s
birth. Among
those documents there were six totally unknown letters written by him. The letters refer¬
red to the process of translating into Serbian and publishing his autobiography which ap¬
peared titled From Immigrant to Inventor in September
1923
and achieved great suc¬
cess with twelve editions within two years and the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in
1924.
The
seventh, final letter on this subject, partially known, we found in a private property.
Pupin sent a copy
ofthat
book with dedication to
Matica Srpska
in
1926.
The same
year the Administration of
Matica Srpska
decided to publish the Serbian translation of
the book and asked Pupin for the permission. He consented to it offering to cover all the
expenses of translating and publishing and in that way helping the institution which took
care of cultural progress of his people. He let
Matica
choose the translator.
Matica
deci¬
ded to engage the Anglicist
Aleksandar Vidakovič,
but Pupin was not satisfied with the
sample of his translation. He decided to take his friend and associate Milan
Jevtić
with
whom Pupin, while the former being in the USA, had led aid campaigns for the allied
Serbian people in the First World War. During his long stay in New York
Jevtić
had pu¬
blished several newspapers in Serbian and after his return to his homeland he continued
with his work as a journalist. The process of arranging and translating the book prolon¬
ged, there were delays, and even a big misunderstanding which almost caused the whole
project to fail. Pupin complained about
Matica
to a friend of his, a military doctor, the
81
first manager of the first Serbian Pasteur Institute in Serbia (in
Niš).
The latter wrote a
letter to the president of the Royal Government, general P.
Živković,
and the state inve¬
stigation was initiated but proved to be unnecessary since the misunderstanding was in¬
cidental. After the exchange of letters between the author and
Matica Srpska
the relation¬
ship between them was harmonized completely and would remain cordial until Pupin s
death.
Matica
published Pupin s book in
1929,
and use the profit to establish in
Matica
the
Mihajlo Pupin
Fund out of which, when it grew enough, autobiographies of distingu¬
ished Serbs were to be published. The Fund was not in function until the Second World
War. After the Hungarian occupation of
Novi Sad
(where
Matica Srpska
has been loca¬
ted) and conversion of currency which followed, the Fund significantly decreased. It suf¬
fered badly again when
Novi Sad
was liberated and with the currency re-conversion the
Fund almost ceased to exist. The Administration of
Matica Srpska
renewed the Fund, but
was nationalized as all private property in Tito s Yugoslavia. Pupin s Fund was renewed
again in
1996
and its purpose has been to reward triennially works of young people from
scientific fields which Pupin was engaged in.
All still unknown and unused letters by
Mihajlo
Pupin were reproduced (on special
paper) in this publication. They are given in chronological order with the whole series of
archival documents (letters, drafts for letters, extracts from the minutes of
Matica Srpska,
state documents) or authentic transcripts of those documents. These are connected with
the process of translating of the Pupin s book into Serbian, and are kept with the Manu¬
script department of
Matica Srpska.
According to the documents that process was turbu¬
lent and confirm the Latin sentence: Habent
sua fata libelli.
The publication gives opportunity to enrich thoroughly our knowledge about the
great scientist, especially about some aspects of his personality, and in that way it helps
for the present and future generations to get a closer and nicer picture of the man who
contributed to their well-being.
