all the Neapolitan drawings in the Depart¬
ment of Prints and Drawings in the
Museum for
drawings have previously only been known
to a small group of specialists, whose curiosity was piqued by the fact
that most of them supposedly belonged to the Neapolitan painter Fran¬
cesco Solimena. That supposition can now be refuted. It turns out instead
that the collection was part of a much larger one that can be traced back
to Naples at the end of the eighteenth century, from which other sheets are
now in some of the leading public collections in New York, Washington,
Vienna, London, Paris, Oslo and elsewhere.
The neglect of these works reflects the general disregard for Neapolitan
drawings, despite the fact that Naples was one of the most vibrant art
centres in Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In
this period, Neapolitan draughtsmanship emerged with a distinct regional
quality rivalled only by Genoa and Bologna.
The collection contains drawings by almost all the main protagonists of
the Neapolitan school, such as Battistello Caracciolo,
Aniello
Giordano, Giovanni Battista Beinaschi, Giacomo del Pò, Francesco Soli-
mena, Francesco de Mura, Domenico Mondo,
that offer an insight into the working methods in Solimena s academy
and workshop.
