До- датни разлог je да се уклоне погрешни стереотипи којима се ставља знак супротно- сти између две националне величине — највеће научне личности и најстаријег кул- турног друштва. Обе ове намене књиге имају свој ослонац у богатом архивском фонду Рукописног одељења Матице српске. Сва важнија документа репродукују се у овој књизи фототипски, само понекад препричавају се. Уз архивске коришћени су и извори информација из материјала штампаних у многобројним публикацијама Матице српске. Коришћено je и све оно што се са документарним матеріалом из Матице српске преплиће у толикој мери да би изостављање изазвало неоправдане празнине. Но аутор je настојао да што брижљивије заштити интелектуална права власника таквих „туђих докумената и информација. Књига je настајала по поглављима хронолошке хијерархије, али хронолошки принцип није сматран неприкосновеним мерилом. Јер аутор je настојао да оформи тематске целине да би поглавља учинио кохерентнијим па и занимљивијим. Аутен- тичност података je најбрижљивије чувана, ништа није додавано или домшшьано, претпоставке су увек декларисане као такве. Од принципа научне студије аутор je одступио само у техничком детаљу — библиографске и друге напомене нису издво- јене у фусноте него су инкорпорисане у текст. У првом поглављу Породица, дају се из старих бројева Летописа, часописа Матице српске, подали о свештеницима с презименом Тесла и о Мандићима, Ни¬ колином деди и прадеди с мајчине стране из двадесетих година XIX века. Међу претплатницима на једну од киьига Матице српске из године Николиног рођења на¬ шли су се имена његовог деде по мајци и његовог оца. Саопштава се писмо једног Теслиног сестрића са генеалошким подацима о породици, указује се на некоришћен чланак из Летописа о Николином оцу Милутину као дописнику новина Срйски дневник и прилаже један од тих дописа. 157 Поглавље Стипендија аутентичним документима који ce објављују реконстру- ише околности због којих Никола Тесла није добио помоћ за студије од Матице српске. На тај начин ce елиминишу све досадашње мистификације, шпекулације, малициозности које су као полуистине често биле саставни део биографских написа о Николи Тесли. У библиографији о Николи Тесли која je недозвољиво мањкава бар што се ти¬ че јединица писаних на српском језику, скоро никад се не помиње први напис о њему на српском језику у новосадским новинама Браник чији je власник M. Дими- тријевић био високи функционер Матице српске, а уредник Јоксимовић тада млад човек, но ипак члан Ккьижевног и Управног одбора Матице. Чланак о Тесли за који je несумњиво заслужан Јоксимовић као Теслин друг из Граца, потписан je шифром који се овом приликом са готово потпуном тачношћу декодира именом Теслиног ујака Петра Мандића, доцнијег митрополита Николаја. Његов чланак укључен je y књигу јер раније никада није прештампан из старих новинских хартија. Поглављу Два великана повод je Теслино писмо које се чува y Рукописном одељењу Матице српске, а у литератури о њему никада није било коришћено. Упу- ћено je највећем српском лиричару XIX века Лази Костићу као честитка за венчање за које су обојица знали да je изнуђено животним околностима. Ово поглавље на- лик je љубавној причи трагичног предзнака y којој je Тесла ненамерни учесник. Причу су сложила документа повезана коментарима, а без иједног „фикшн еле¬ мента. Теслино учлањење у Матицу српску поглавље je којим ce документује присту¬ пайте великог научника Матици српској 1902. Уплативши 100 круна чланарине он je за члана примљен на Главној скупштини 25. септембра 1902. Међутим, морали су да га категоришу као приложника јер није био држављанин Аустроугарске која je настојала да Матицу, као српску националну организацију, држи у што ужим окви- рима. Најпопуларнији орган Матице, Календар за 1903. годину, донео je о Тесли, новом члану Матице, чланак др Тихомира Остојића који je литератури о Тесли остао сасвим непознат. Поглавље Тесла — Бокшан — Матица реконструише како je трудом инжење- ра Славка Бокшана дошло до низа чланака о Тесли уочи његове седамдесетогоди- шњице. Први и најважнији од тих чланака најплоднијег познаваоца Теслиног дела код нас штампани су у издањима Матице српске и уз велику подршку круга људи из Матице српске који су истовремено били Бокшанови блиски пријатељи, па и разредни другови из Српске гимназије у Новом Саду. Тако се дескрипцијом Бокша- новог рада на стварању култа Николе Тесле код нас открива и знатна улога Матице српске у том процесу. Почати члан и несуђени аутор наслов je поглавља које описује и документује Теслин избор за почасног члана Матице српске у години прославе њене стогоди- шњице заједно са највећим именима тадашње културе и науке код нас, али и са 158 странцима заслужним за Матицу и нашу културу. Међу њима je и председник Че- хословачке Републике Томаш Гариг Масарик. С тим избором и Теслиним угледом повезана je инициатива да Матица штампа Теслину аутобиографију. Није се пре¬ творила у дело jep Тесла заправо никада није ни написао целовиту аутобиографију. Подаци о томе шта се у издањима Матице српске писало о Тесли (изузев ра- дова из пера Славка Бокшана) те малобројни Теслини текстови у њима дају се ко- ментарисани у поглављу О Тесли и од Тесле. Међу подацима je и један веома непри- јатан по Матицу и њен реноме. У Летопису 1895. у два наставка (укупно 40 страни¬ ца) штампа се рад о електрицитету и његовој примени, а да се ниједанпут не поми- н>е Никола Тесла, иако се неки његови проналасци као адеспотни износе као при¬ мери технолошког напретка света. Међу написима позитивног предзнака нарочито je занимљив мемоарски текст Никола Тесла међу српском омладином Загреба и Бео- Града у коме су заборављени детаљи Теслиног боравка „код куће 1892. Помени Николе Тесле у преписци професора Павла Радосављевића претпослед- ње je поглавље књиге. Коришћен je фонд од око 2.500 писама која се од 1964. чувају у Рукописном одељењу Матице српске. Припадају кореспонденцій угледног аме- рйчког професора, научника, оснивача експерименталне психологије у САД који je био веома близак са Николом Теслом, у понечему посредник између великог уса- мљеника и спољњег света. Из те преписке репродукују се делови који се односе на Теслу. Међу њима су и веома занимљиви, а до сада непознати детаљи. У последнем поглављу, Јубилеји, дају се фактографски прегледи прославе Ни¬ коле Тесле у Матицй српској почевши од седамдесетогодишњице 1926. до овогоди- шњих збивања. Посебно je занимљива прослава осамдесетогодишњице, двострука, y Матици српској и у Новосадском магистрату када je Тесла проглашен за почасног грађанина Новог Сада и о томе телеграфски извештен. Питања односа Николе Тесле и Матице српске после ове юьиге могу се сма- трати научно расчишћеним. Известан број нових података о Тесли такође су до- принос ове књиге његовом 150-ом рођендану. На могуће замерке да се књига бави и многим ситницама око Николе Тесле нека одговори Теслин најомиљенији песник Јован Јовановић Змај. Он je, објављујући сећања на погреб мезимца српске литера¬ туре XIX века рано умрлог песника Бранка Радичевића, написао о том свом чланку следећу реченицу: „Ствар није од велике важности, али када се тиче Бранка онда ни ситница није ситница. Ако то важи за звезду српског романтизма, још више ва¬ жи за недостижну звезду светске науке. 159 NIKOLA TESLA AND THE MATICA SRPSKA Summary The main reason for the making of this book is the desire for as many documents as possible to reach the scientific and reading public, to add an element or two to help fill out the biography and offer a more luxuriant portrait of one of the greatest represen¬ tatives of the Serbian people. A secondary reason is to remove the false stereotype which has made opposites of two great national treasures — the greatest scientist and the oldest cultural association. Both of these intentions in this book are founded on the great wealth of the archival materials of the Manuscripts Department of the Matica srpska. All of the more important documents on this topic are photostatically reproduced as in this book, and only here and there are they simply retold. Along with these archive sources, others have been found in the materials printed in the numerous publications of the Ma¬ tica srpska. Likewise, all of the documentary materials were used that are so interwoven with those of the Matica srpska that unjustified gaps would appear if those sources were omitted. The author has made every effort to protect the intellectual property of the owners of such outside documents and information. The book was written in chapters with a chronological hierarchy, but the chronolo¬ gical principle has not been taken as an inviolable measure. Rather, the author has at¬ tempted to create thematic entireties so that the chapters would remain coherent and therefore more interesting. The authenticity of the data has been most carefully preser¬ ved, without addition or speculation, and suppositions are always noted as being such. The author deviated from using the principle of scholarly study only in a technical detail — bibliographic and other notes are not separated into footnotes but are rather incorpo¬ rated into the text. In the first chapter, Family, facts are given from old issues of the Letopis/ Annak of the Matica srpska about the priests with the surname of Tesla, and also about the Mandić family, about Nikola s maternal grandfather and great-grandfather from the twenties of the 19* century. Among the subscribers to one of the books of the Matica srpska in the year of Nikola s birth, one can find the name of his maternal grandfather and of his father. A letter from one of Tesla s nephews is published with genealogical information on the family, an unused article from the Letopis is highlighted about Nikola s father 160 Milutin as correspondent of the Srpski dnevnik/The Serbian Daily newspaper, and one of his articles is included. The chapter entitled Scholarship offers authentic documents that reconstruct the circumstances under which Nikola Tesla did not receive aid for his studies from the Ma¬ tica srpska. In this way, all the recurring mystifications, speculations and malicious com¬ ments are eliminated, including those half-truths which have so often been an integral part of the biographical writings about Nikola Tesla. In the bibliography about Nikola Tesla that is unforgivably sparse, at least as far as the entries written in Serbian are concerned, hardly anyone ever mentions the first article about him in Serbian in Branih Rampart, the Novi Sad newspaper: the paper was owned by M. Dimitrijević, a high official in the Matica srpska, and though the editor, Joksimo- vić, was still a young man at the time, he was still a member of the Literature Committee and Steering Committee of the Matica. The article about Tesla, surely instigated by Joksi- mović as Tesla s friend from Graz, is signed in a code that is with almost complete cer¬ tainty deciphered as the name of Tesla s uncle, Petar Mandić, who later became Metro¬ politan Nikolaj. His article is included in the book because it has never been reprinted from the old newspaper. The chapter Two Outstanding Men is inspired by a letter from Tesla that is kept in the Manuscripts Department of the Matica srpska and that has never been used in the literature about him. It is addressed to the greatest Serbian lyric poet of the 19th century, Laza Kostić, as a congratulatory note on his marriage, even though they both knew that the wedding was compelled by life circumstances. This chapter is similar to a tragic love story in which Tesla is an unintentional participant. The story is told through documents connected by commentaries, without a single element of fiction . Tesla s Membership in the Matica srpska is a chapter which documents how the great scientist joined the Matica srpska in 1902. Paying a membership fee of 100 crowns, he was accepted as a member by the General Congress on September 25,1902. However, they had to categorize him as a contributing member because he was not a citizen of Austro-Hungary which was attempting to keep the work of the Matica, as a Serbian na¬ tional organization, within very tight confines. The most popular organ of the Matica, the Kalendar/Calendar of 1903, published an article by Dr. Tihomir Ostojić on Tesla, a new member of the Matica, but that article has remained outside of the domain of the literature on Tesla. The chapter entitled Tesla — Boksan — Matica reconstructs the efforts of the engi¬ neer named Slávko Bokšan that resulted in a series of articles on Tesla on the eve of his seventieth birthday. The first and most important of those articles by the most prolific of the scholars on Tesla s work were printed in the editions of the Matica srpska, with the overwhelming support of a group of people within the Matica who were also close friends of Bokšan, some of them even classmates from the Serbian gymnasium in Novi Sad. Thereby, the description of Boksan s work on the creation of a cult of Nikola Tesla in Serbia reveals the significant role the Matica srpska played in that process. 161 Honorary Member and a Book Never to Be is the title of the chapter that describes and documents Tesla s election as an honorary member of the Matica srpska in the year of its centennial celebration, together with the greatest names of culture and science at the time in Serbia, but also including foreigners deserving recognition by the Matica and Serbian culture. Among them was also the president of the Czechoslovak Republic, To¬ mas Garig Masarik. Because of this election and Tesla s reputation, there was an initiative for the Matica to publish Tesla s autobiography. This never happened because Tesla ne¬ ver actually wrote his entire autobiography. Facts about what was written in the publications of the Matica srpska about Tesla (besides the works from the pen of Slávko Bokšan) and the small number of Tesla s texts in them are presented and commented on in the chapter About Tesla and from Tesla. Among those facts is one that is unpleasant for the Matica and its reputation. In the Letopis/ Annah of 1895 in two parts (on a total of 40 pages) an article was published on electricity and its applications, and Nikola Tesla s name is not mentioned even once, even though some of his adespota inventions were proclaimed as examples of the techno¬ logical advancement of the world. Among the texts with a rather positive flavor, of spe¬ cial interest is the memoirist text Nikola Tesla among the Young People of Zagreb and Belgrade, which offers forgotten details of Tesla s trip home in 1892. Mention of Nikola Tesla in the Correspondence of Professor Pavle Radosavljević is the next to the last chapter in the book. A collection of some 2,500 letters is used, kept in the Manuscripts Department of the Matica srpska since 1964. They are part of the corre¬ spondence of a reputable American professor, a scholar, one of the founders of experi¬ mental psychology in the USA, who was quite close to Nikola Tesla, often the go-be¬ tween for the lone-wolf scientist and the rest of the world. The parts of the correspon¬ dence that have to do with Tesla are given in reproduction. There are many interesting details in them, some of which have never been published before. In the last chapter, Jubilees, factual overviews of the celebrations of Nikola Tesla at the Matica srpska are given, starting with the seventieth anniversary in 1926 and ending with the events of this year. Of special interest is the eightieth birthday celebration, a do¬ uble one held at the Matica srpska and the Novi Sad magistrate, when Tesla was pro¬ claimed an honorary citizen of Novi Sad and was informed of this by telegraph. The question of the relationship between Nikola Tesla and the Matica srpska can be considered as cleared up with the completion of this book A certain number of new facts about Tesla are another contribution of this book on the occasion of his 150th birthday celebration. To the possible objection that this book deals with too many mi¬ nute details about Nikola Tesla, let Tesla s favorite poet, Jovan Jovanović Zmaj, be cited in response. In publishing his reminiscences about the funeral of the favorite son of 19th century Serbian literature, Branko Radičević, who died a young man, he wrote the following sentence: This thing is not of great importance, but when we speak of Branko Radičević even the smallest detail is not small. If that is true of the star of Serbian Romanticism, it is even more so for the unreachable star of science in the world. 162

Почати члан и несуђени аутор наслов je поглавља које описује и документује Теслин избор за почасног члана Матице српске у години прославе њене стогоди- шњице заједно са највећим именима тадашње културе и науке код нас, али и са 158 странцима заслужним за Матицу и нашу културу. Међу њима je и председник Че- хословачке Републике Томаш Гариг Масарик. С тим избором и Теслиним угледом повезана je инициатива да Матица штампа Теслину аутобиографију. Није се пре¬ творила у дело jep Тесла заправо никада није ни написао целовиту аутобиографију. Подаци о томе шта се у издањима Матице српске писало о Тесли (изузев ра- дова из пера Славка Бокшана) те малобројни Теслини текстови у њима дају се ко- ментарисани у поглављу О Тесли и од Тесле. Међу подацима je и један веома непри- јатан по Матицу и њен реноме. У Летопису 1895. у два наставка (укупно 40 страни¬ ца) штампа се рад о електрицитету и његовој примени, а да се ниједанпут не поми- н>е Никола Тесла, иако се неки његови проналасци као адеспотни износе као при¬ мери технолошког напретка света. Међу написима позитивног предзнака нарочито je занимљив мемоарски текст Никола Тесла међу српском омладином Загреба и Бео- Града у коме су заборављени детаљи Теслиног боравка „код куће" 1892. Помени Николе Тесле у преписци професора Павла Радосављевића претпослед- ње je поглавље књиге. Коришћен je фонд од око 2.500 писама која се од 1964. чувају у Рукописном одељењу Матице српске. Припадају кореспонденцій угледног аме- рйчког професора, научника, оснивача експерименталне психологије у САД који je био веома близак са Николом Теслом, у понечему посредник између великог уса- мљеника и спољњег света. Из те преписке репродукују се делови који се односе на Теслу. Међу њима су и веома занимљиви, а до сада непознати детаљи. У последнем поглављу, Јубилеји, дају се фактографски прегледи прославе Ни¬ коле Тесле у Матицй српској почевши од седамдесетогодишњице 1926. до овогоди- шњих збивања. Посебно je занимљива прослава осамдесетогодишњице, двострука, y Матици српској и у Новосадском магистрату када je Тесла проглашен за почасног грађанина Новог Сада и о томе телеграфски извештен. Питања односа Николе Тесле и Матице српске после ове юьиге могу се сма- трати научно расчишћеним. Известан број нових података о Тесли такође су до- принос ове књиге његовом 150-ом рођендану. На могуће замерке да се књига бави и многим ситницама око Николе Тесле нека одговори Теслин најомиљенији песник Јован Јовановић Змај. Он je, објављујући сећања на погреб мезимца српске литера¬ туре XIX века рано умрлог песника Бранка Радичевића, написао о том свом чланку следећу реченицу: „Ствар није од велике важности, али када се тиче Бранка онда ни ситница није ситница." Ако то важи за звезду српског романтизма, још више ва¬ жи за недостижну звезду светске науке. 159 NIKOLA TESLA AND THE MATICA SRPSKA Summary The main reason for the making of this book is the desire for as many documents as possible to reach the scientific and reading public, to add an element or two to help fill out the biography and offer a more luxuriant portrait of one of the greatest represen¬ tatives of the Serbian people. A secondary reason is to remove the false stereotype which has made opposites of two great national treasures — the greatest scientist and the oldest cultural association. Both of these intentions in this book are founded on the great wealth of the archival materials of the Manuscripts Department of the Matica srpska. All of the more important documents on this topic are photostatically reproduced as in this book, and only here and there are they simply retold. Along with these archive sources, others have been found in the materials printed in the numerous publications of the Ma¬ tica srpska. Likewise, all of the documentary materials were used that are so interwoven with those of the Matica srpska that unjustified gaps would appear if those sources were omitted. The author has made every effort to protect the intellectual property of the owners of such "outside" documents and information. The book was written in chapters with a chronological hierarchy, but the chronolo¬ gical principle has not been taken as an inviolable measure. Rather, the author has at¬ tempted to create thematic entireties so that the chapters would remain coherent and therefore more interesting. The authenticity of the data has been most carefully preser¬ ved, without addition or speculation, and suppositions are always noted as being such. The author deviated from using the principle of scholarly study only in a technical detail — bibliographic and other notes are not separated into footnotes but are rather incorpo¬ rated into the text. In the first chapter, Family, facts are given from old issues of the Letopis/ 'Annak of the Matica srpska about the priests with the surname of Tesla, and also about the Mandić family, about Nikola's maternal grandfather and great-grandfather from the twenties of the 19* century. Among the subscribers to one of the books of the Matica srpska in the year of Nikola's birth, one can find the name of his maternal grandfather and of his father. A letter from one of Tesla's nephews is published with genealogical information on the family, an unused article from the Letopis is highlighted about Nikola's father 160 Milutin as correspondent of the Srpski dnevnik/The Serbian Daily newspaper, and one of his articles is included. The chapter entitled Scholarship offers authentic documents that reconstruct the circumstances under which Nikola Tesla did not receive aid for his studies from the Ma¬ tica srpska. In this way, all the recurring mystifications, speculations and malicious com¬ ments are eliminated, including those half-truths which have so often been an integral part of the biographical writings about Nikola Tesla. In the bibliography about Nikola Tesla that is unforgivably sparse, at least as far as the entries written in Serbian are concerned, hardly anyone ever mentions the first article about him in Serbian in Branih 'Rampart, the Novi Sad newspaper: the paper was owned by M. Dimitrijević, a high official in the Matica srpska, and though the editor, Joksimo- vić, was still a young man at the time, he was still a member of the Literature Committee and Steering Committee of the Matica. The article about Tesla, surely instigated by Joksi- mović as Tesla's friend from Graz, is signed in a code that is with almost complete cer¬ tainty deciphered as the name of Tesla's uncle, Petar Mandić, who later became Metro¬ politan Nikolaj. His article is included in the book because it has never been reprinted from the old newspaper. The chapter Two Outstanding Men is inspired by a letter from Tesla that is kept in the Manuscripts Department of the Matica srpska and that has never been used in the literature about him. It is addressed to the greatest Serbian lyric poet of the 19th century, Laza Kostić, as a congratulatory note on his marriage, even though they both knew that the wedding was compelled by life circumstances. This chapter is similar to a tragic love story in which Tesla is an unintentional participant. The story is told through documents connected by commentaries, without a single element of "fiction". Tesla's Membership in the Matica srpska is a chapter which documents how the great scientist joined the Matica srpska in 1902. Paying a membership fee of 100 crowns, he was accepted as a member by the General Congress on September 25,1902. However, they had to categorize him as a contributing member because he was not a citizen of Austro-Hungary which was attempting to keep the work of the Matica, as a Serbian na¬ tional organization, within very tight confines. The most popular organ of the Matica, the Kalendar/Calendar of 1903, published an article by Dr. Tihomir Ostojić on Tesla, a new member of the Matica, but that article has remained outside of the domain of the literature on Tesla. The chapter entitled Tesla — Boksan — Matica reconstructs the efforts of the engi¬ neer named Slávko Bokšan that resulted in a series of articles on Tesla on the eve of his seventieth birthday. The first and most important of those articles by the most prolific of the scholars on Tesla's work were printed in the editions of the Matica srpska, with the overwhelming support of a group of people within the Matica who were also close friends of Bokšan, some of them even classmates from the Serbian gymnasium in Novi Sad. Thereby, the description of Boksan's work on the creation of a cult of Nikola Tesla in Serbia reveals the significant role the Matica srpska played in that process. 161 Honorary Member and a Book Never to Be is the title of the chapter that describes and documents Tesla's election as an honorary member of the Matica srpska in the year of its centennial celebration, together with the greatest names of culture and science at the time in Serbia, but also including foreigners deserving recognition by the Matica and Serbian culture. Among them was also the president of the Czechoslovak Republic, To¬ mas Garig Masarik. Because of this election and Tesla's reputation, there was an initiative for the Matica to publish Tesla's autobiography. This never happened because Tesla ne¬ ver actually wrote his entire autobiography. Facts about what was written in the publications of the Matica srpska about Tesla (besides the works from the pen of Slávko Bokšan) and the small number of Tesla's texts in them are presented and commented on in the chapter About Tesla and from Tesla. Among those facts is one that is unpleasant for the Matica and its reputation. In the Letopis/ Annah of 1895 in two parts (on a total of 40 pages) an article was published on electricity and its applications, and Nikola Tesla's name is not mentioned even once, even though some of his adespota inventions were proclaimed as examples of the techno¬ logical advancement of the world. Among the texts with a rather positive flavor, of spe¬ cial interest is the memoirist text Nikola Tesla among the Young People of Zagreb and Belgrade, which offers forgotten details of Tesla's trip "home" in 1892. Mention of Nikola Tesla in the Correspondence of Professor Pavle Radosavljević is the next to the last chapter in the book. A collection of some 2,500 letters is used, kept in the Manuscripts Department of the Matica srpska since 1964. They are part of the corre¬ spondence of a reputable American professor, a scholar, one of the founders of experi¬ mental psychology in the USA, who was quite close to Nikola Tesla, often the go-be¬ tween for the lone-wolf scientist and the rest of the world. The parts of the correspon¬ dence that have to do with Tesla are given in reproduction. There are many interesting details in them, some of which have never been published before. In the last chapter, Jubilees, factual overviews of the celebrations of Nikola Tesla at the Matica srpska are given, starting with the seventieth anniversary in 1926 and ending with the events of this year. Of special interest is the eightieth birthday celebration, a do¬ uble one held at the Matica srpska and the Novi Sad magistrate, when Tesla was pro¬ claimed an honorary citizen of Novi Sad and was informed of this by telegraph. The question of the relationship between Nikola Tesla and the Matica srpska can be considered as cleared up with the completion of this book A certain number of new facts about Tesla are another contribution of this book on the occasion of his 150th birthday celebration. To the possible objection that this book deals with too many mi¬ nute details about Nikola Tesla, let Tesla's favorite poet, Jovan Jovanović Zmaj, be cited in response. In publishing his reminiscences about the funeral of the favorite son of 19th century Serbian literature, Branko Radičević, who died a young man, he wrote the following sentence: "This thing is not of great importance, but when we speak of Branko Radičević even the smallest detail is not small." If that is true of the star of Serbian Romanticism, it is even more so for the unreachable star of science in the world. 162
