SUMMARY
The academic singing society
Obilie
was founded at the beginning of February
1884
at the High School of Belgrade upon an initiative of Svetolik
Ranković
and
Bogdan
Popović,
the two musically educated students of the High School and, later on, the
renowned professors. The society was given the name
Obilie
at the annual assembly
held on
8
November,
21
November by the new calendar,
1887.
That day (the day of
St. Michael, the Archangel) was taken as the
slava
(the patron saint s day) of the soci¬
ety. At the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo in
Kruševac,
the society was awarded a flag by the King,
Aleksandar Obrenović,
who became the
high patron of the society.
Obilie
held numerous concerts all over Serbia, but also abroad, thus presenting the
Serbian music and culture to other nations. Its mission, also, was to spread the
awareness of the common feelings of the peoples of the Slav South and of the need
of their complete freedom from slavery. This was symbolized in the society s perfor¬
mance of the hymn Hey, trumpeter, or People s Assembly, composed by Josif
Marinković
to the verses of Stevan Vladislav
Kaćanski.
The presidents of
Obilie
were
renowned professors of the High School, later of the Belgrade University: Svetomir
Nikolajević, Jovan Cvijić, Bogdan Popovioć, Svetolik Radovanović, Stanoje
Stanojević,
Milenko Vesnic, Ivan
Đaja, Vladimir Ćorović, Aleksandar Leko, Ilija Pržić
and others. The first conductor was
Stevan Mokranjac,
followed by
Josif
Marinković,
Stanislav
Binički, Hinko Maržinec, Miloje Milojević, Božidar
Joksimović, Jovan Srbulj, Lovro Matičić, Jovan Bandur, Stevan Hristić, Svetolik
Pašćan, Branko Dragutinović,
Alfred
Pordes
and others.
Obilie
grew into one of the
best known students choirs in the world. Performing in numerous countries it col¬
lected flattering reviews of the world s music critics.
Before World War I broke out,
Obilie
had toured almost the whole of Serbia and vis¬
ited, outside Serbia, Turn
Severin
(1891),
Velika Kikinda
(1901),
Banja Luka
(1905),
Salonika and Skopje
(1907
and
1914
respectively), Sofia
(1910),
Sarajevo
(1911),
Novi Sad
(1912)
and Russia
(1912).
The most important of all these tours was, of
course, the
15
day tour of Russia with concerts in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev and
Odessa.
As soon as the war was over, already in June
1919,
Obilie
was revived. Its member¬
ship grew to
90.
The society was headed by professors Stanoje
Stanojević,
then Ivan
Đaja
and
Aleksandar Leko
who will, together with the conductors Miloje
Milojević,
Jovan
Srbulj and Lovro
Matičić,
bring
Obilie
once again to the old glory road. They
toured the whole of Yugoslavia and, in the spring of
1925,
Obilie
visited Poland.
Three years later the choir was enthusiastically received in the Vienna
Konzerthaus
and it cut the first records for His Master s Voice and Columbia companies. They
visited Czechoslovakia in
1929,
Switzerland in
1932
and Germany, in the same year,
where they took part in an international academic singing societies festival, held in
Munich,
and received the best of reviews. After that, the society toured Rumania and
Bulgaria, in
1934.
Beside the works of the national authors,
Mokranjac, Marinković, Hristić, Milojević,
Slavenski, Vukdragović, Manojlović, Gotovac, Bajšanski
and others,
Obilić s
reper¬
toire consisted of „King David (Arthur Honegger), „Stabat
Mater (Karol
Szymanowski), „King Oedipus (Igor Stravinsky), „Parsifal (Richard Wagner), the
works of Jacobus Galus, „Requiem (W. A. Mozart, „Mass and
„Te Deum
(Anton
Bruckner).
At the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the singing society, in June
1934,
the
King,
Aleksandar Karađorđević,
awarded
Obilie
a flag which he, also, gave a name to.
From
1935
to
1941,
Obilie
visited Turkey
(1935),
Greece
(1936),
Poland
(1937),
France
(1938),
Bulgaria
(1939),
Rumania
(1940)
and Hungary
(1941).
It is believed
that the tour of France, from
3
to
23
July
1938,
was the most successful one. The
French admitted that they had never before heard a choir as good as
Obilie
and
pointed out that nobody could sing „La Marseillaise better than the members of
Obilie.
The academic singing society
Obilie
ceased their activities in
1941
when World War
II reached our country. After the liberation, its traditions were continued, with
exceptional success, by Academic Cultural and Artistic Society
Branko Krsmanović.
Until
1980,
the conductor was
Bogdan Babić.
From
1981
to the present day, the
artistic director and the conductor of the choir has been Darinka
Matić Marović.
The original name was returned to the choir in
1991.
