SUMMARY
In
Njegoš
Collected works, his correspondence takes almost half of
the opus. During his
21
years of reign
(1830-1851),
he wrote about
2000
letters. Those letters have mostly official or business and official charac¬
ter, and there are very few private ones. None of the Montenegrin rule¬
rs, before or after
Njegoš,
has communicated through letters so much.
Besides being the documents of his time (historical, economic, so¬
cial, cultural and artistic, religious),
Njegoš
letters are a faithful mirror
of his personality. We have tried to describe such a spiritually rich per¬
sonality, in this study, in the correspondence, through three profiles: po¬
litical, religious
ans
artistic.
The political profile, which is understandable, is the most dominant.
The correspondence faithfully reveals
Njegoš,
the politician. We have de¬
termined seven stages through which
Njegoš
passed in his political acti¬
ons. For each of those stages, it is characteristic that it finishes with a
crucial event which closes the stage and gives a hint of the next one. it
is visible that
Njegoš
achieved, in the first stage
(1830-1833)
apolitical
power, together with certain experience: he created state government,
cancelled dual government, provided constant Russian assistance and
got the title bishop in
Petrograd.
He had a clear vision of the future of
Montenegro, even then, as a free and independent country.
His greatest political success was that he set the borders between
Montenegro and Austria, and partially with Turkey, toward Herzegovi¬
na. He was not able to either establish peace or determine the borders
with Skadar veziers, in spite of great efforts.
Osman
pasha even conque¬
red the two islands on the Skadar lake.
In the revolutionary
1848,
N jegoš
hoped to open the possibility of ac¬
hieving permanent freedom, not only of his people but of all the Slavs
and Yugoslavs who were under foreign governments. He was preparing
Montenegrins to participate in that revolutionary act. But his hopes we¬
re in vain. He even disturbed, with such engagement of his, the relation
with Austria, and also the relations with Russia grew cold, even though
its assistance was regularly sent to Montenegro.
Going through such uncertainties and futile expectations,
Njegoš
got sick from tuberculosis and died when he was

He died unhappy,
because he did not completely realized his strategic political goals.
Njegoš,
according to his calling was an artistic soul, and according
to his relation toward everything visible and unvisible
-
deeply religio¬
us man. Both of these components
-
being religious and his drive for
arts
-
can be seen in his correspondence.
He thought of his being a ruler of Montenegro, as God s providence,
and that that providence is constantly following him. That was why, in
all of his affairs, especially when it was most difficult and uncertain for
him, he was referring to God. God was his firm support to endure ev¬
erything and to fight persistently. He thought his destiny was in God s
hands, too. When he felt the death was near, he accepted it as God s
will, and in his last will he was asking for his place in eternity.
His correspondence reveals that his artistic nature is manifested in
two ways: in the correspondence itself in the form of differently shaped
and expressive forms, and through special works of art. The confirmation
of
Njegoš
poetic talent was most completely expressed in the triad:
Luča
mikrokozma , Gorski vijenac , and Lažni carŠćepan Mali . Gorski vije¬
nac
is his first-class work
ofart. Ihrough
the study, we have followed the
developments of themes and contents of this and other poetic works.
It is evident, from the whole correspondence, that
Njegoš
political
profile was fully expressed in
1841,
artistic one in
1847,
while his religio¬
sity was constant, unchangeable and essentially marked in his last will.
Njegoš
is a harmonious and unique person, revealed in a triad. Ac¬
tually, as God is in
Macrocosmos
the Father (Bishop), the fudge (Ruler),
and the Poet (Creator of new worlds), so
Njegoš
is in a small Montenegrin
cosmos the father (bishop), the judge (ruler), the poet (creator of works of
poetry). Outstanding example of God s representation among people.
