The names of foreign origin in Popovo s toponymy are predominantly of Ottoman
Turkish, Arabian and Persian origin created during the five-century Ottoman rule in
Bulgaria. Big part of them belongs to loans that have penetrated deeply in the dialects
and the standard system of the Bulgarian language, and has not been accepted as for¬
eign words long since. A group of Ottoman Turkish, Arabian and Persian elements
have been completely integrated in the Bulgarian
adaptation processes (phonetic, morphologic, accentual, lexico-semantic) under the
influence of the Bulgarian language.
A considerable number of place names of Turkish, Arabian and Persian origin in
the region of
was disrupted in part of the villages in the past because some of the old Bulgarian
settlements had disappeared (for instance,
others) and in other settlements the Bulgarian population was converted to
Mohammedanism and was forced to accept Ottoman Turkish as its own and to create
or use toponyms in that language. After the Liberation a significant part of the Turkish
speaking population migrated to Turkey and sold its lands to the new coming settlers
from different parts of the Bulgarian language territory. The new Bulgarian speaking
population bought the properties and accepted them with their old Turkish names us¬
ing them without a substitution with Bulgarian ones. This is the way to explain the pres¬
ence of Turkish toponyms in villages settled only with Bulgarian population as long ago
as the Liberation
lated today completely with Turkish speaking Muslim population many archaic Bulgar¬
ian toponyms have been preserved. A striking example for that is the village of Krepcha
in whose land a rock monastery with an Old Bulgarian inscription of the 9th century has
been discovered as well.
Regardless of the fact that Popovo s toponymy has been under the influence of
foreign languages, it remains Bulgarian in its basis. The
